13 Times Taylor Swift Understood Us Better Than Anyone Else

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Conn chapter.

Going through something emotional?  Well, it is a pretty safe bet that Taylor Swift has a song describing your exact situation.  In those moments when nobody seems to understand what is bothering us, sometimes it is hard to resist the urge of blasting a T-Swift song, because really, who says it better?  Since the number 13 holds a lot of significance for Taylor Swift (she was born on the 13th of December and she says it is her lucky number), here are 13 times when we were lucky to have her songs to turn to.

1. When we had a falling out with someone we cared about

 Song: “The Story of Us”

Most Relatable Lyrics: “This is looking like a contest of who can act like they care less”

A single misunderstanding or argument cannot compete with months and months of good times, right? But suddenly you aren’t speaking.  All of the blank stares and awkwardness just leaves you feeling cold and desperately trying to figure out how you managed to go from being close friends to strangers overnight.

2. When we felt pressured to have our entire lives mapped out

Song: “A Place in this World”

Most Relatable Lyrics: I don’t know what I want, so don’t ask me ‘cause I’m still trying to figure it out”

As college students, it seems as if everyone expects us to have every second of our futures planned out when, the reality is, most days we aren’t even sure which dining hall we are going to for dinner.  But there is nothing wrong with living in the moment and it is ok if tomorrow is a mystery!

3. When the person we were looking forward to seeing the most didn’t show up

Song: “The Moment I Knew”

Most Relatable Lyrics: “I’ve got my eye on the door, just waiting for you to walk in, but the time is ticking”

You had your outfit picked out days ahead of time and spent hours imagining all the possible ways it could play out when the person you’ve been crushing on (since forever) finally realizes that you’re their soul mate.  But when the moment finally arrives, they are nowhere to be found.

4. When the person we loved was in love with someone else

Song: “Teardrops on My Guitar”

Most Relatable Lyrics: “He says he’s so in love, he’s finally got it right, I wonder if he knows he’s all I think about at night”

You and your guy friend are destined to be together.  The only problem is he doesn’t know it yet.  Actually, he seems to have you confused with someone else!  Watching the person you love loving somebody else is pretty high on the list of awful feelings one can experience.  Exactly why is it so painful?  Because, they are the only one who’s got enough of you to break your heart.

5. When someone was trying to cut us down

Song: “Mean”

Most Relatable Lyrics: “You have pointed out my flaws again, as if I don’t already see them”

You were having a great day until someone decided to take it upon themselves to try to get under your skin.  Because how dare you be happy, right?  In moments like these, it is hard not to feel like something is wrong with you but the truth is that it is the other person who has the problem.  And some people are just mean.  And liars.  And pathetic.  And alone in life (as Taylor would say).

6. When nobody understood why we liked someone

Song: “Ours”

Most Relatable Lyrics: “Seems like there’s always someone who disapproves.  They’ll judge it like they know about me and you”

Your friends think he is weird, your parents think he is a bad influence and your sister thinks you could do better…and none of them think they should keep their opinions to themselves.  But the reality is that even if they are right, it still would not change how you feel or the fact that the two of you have an amazing connection.  Luckily, nobody can take what is ours.

7. When we gave someone a second chance…and a third chance…and a fourth…

Song: “Style”

Most Relatable Lyrics: “And when we go crashing down, we come back every time ‘Cause we never go out of style”

The two of you have had more issues than a magazine stand.  Yet you are way too right together to stay apart for long.  Even though you may crash and burn, you always manage to come back in style.

8. When we were feeling left out

Song: “The Outside”

Most Relatable Lyrics: “I can still see you, this ain’t the best view on the outside looking in”

Unless we are talking about the word in the literal sense (the beautiful outdoors), the outside is not where we want to be.  Nobody wants to be left looking in and wishing they were a part of something, but unfortunately we have all found ourselves in this lonely place before.

9. When another girl started flirting with our S.O.

Song: “Better than Revenge”

Most Relatable Lyrics: “She took him faster than you could say ‘sabotage’”

The devil doesn’t always have red horns.  Sometimes he…or she rather, has shiny blond hair and a seemingly endless supply of vintage dresses.  She might have him but we always get the last word and thanks to Taylor…we are experts at handling revenge.

10.  When being an adult just got too hard

Song: “Never Grow Up”

Most Relatable Lyrics: “Oh I don’t wanna grow up, wish I’d never grown up I could still be little”

Who knew being grown up and independent actually meant more than just getting to eat ice cream whenever you wanted?!  If we could tell our ten-year-old selves anything, it would definitely be to savor life’s simplicity before it is gone.

11. When we got involved with a player

Song: “I Knew You were Trouble”

Most Relatable Lyrics: “A new notch in your belt is all I’ll ever be”

We knew he was trouble but somehow managed to push that fact to the back of our minds on account of the fact that he looked like Zac Efron’s long lost twin.  Well, hot or not, we now know he certainly mastered the art of using people.  And we’ll pass on that.

12.  When we knew everything about a guy and he was totally oblivious

Song: “I’d Lie”

Most Relatable Lyrics: “I could tell you his favorite color’s green, he loves to argue, born on the seventeenth”

Ok, so it sounds a tad creepy but let’s be honest here, collegietes.  If we were given exams on our crush’s life instead of on math or science, our GPA’s would be flawless.  Now, if only he knew enough about us to even get a passing grade…

13. When we needed a little help “shaking it off”

Song: “Shake It Off”

Most Relatable Lyrics: “It’s like I got this music in my mind saying, ‘It’s gonna be alright’”

In life, we have two choices of what to do when haters hate and heartbreakers break: either retreat to our beds with a big box of tissues or throw our hands in the air and dance.  Thank you, Taylor, for making the choice a little easier and empowering us to shake off any negativity!
