Hats, Hot Cider, and the Pursuit of Autumn

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Texas chapter.

The Declaration of Independence believed “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” were rights that all men deserved. Our founding fathers didn’t think twice about including the pursuit of autumn, because in the Northeast, they were definitely able to enjoy the season. Well, what about us Texas collegiettes™? How do we celebrate the arrival of autumn in Austin when we’re still ordering our designated “cold-because-it’s-summer” Starbucks drink even though we’re itching to answer the barista with “an extra hot venti non-fat white chocolate mocha with extra whip plus chocolate and caramel drizzle”; it’s just too hot! That is all about to change my dear collegiettes™, for we are sharing several ideas that can help you achieve the three rights all Texas collegiettes™ deserve: hats, hot cider, and the pursuit of autumn.

Fall Fashion

Bohemian layering and Sports team jerseys, two trends for fall!

We recognize the torture you endure every Monday as you sit in front of your TV and watch Blair and Serena on Gossip Girl wear adorable fall outfit after adorable fall outfit. It’s just not fair! It’s much too hot in Texas to wear the fall clothing they wear. Elizabeth Allensworth, the University of Fashion Group assistant PR director, clued us in on what is fashionable and do-able for fall!

“We’ll be seeing a lot of bohemian layering. You can take your maxi dress from summer and then layer it with chunky knits to update it for a fall look.”

Sounds like the perfect idea for us Texans, in case we need to take off a layer when the mid-afternoon sun hits. Any style of hat is also a fall fashion staple! If the bohemian style isn’t for you, consider the ever-important fashion trend of supporting your favorite football team. Why not cozy up on Sunday in a jersey and cheer on your favorite team while avoiding homework? Better yet, cheer on the Rangers since they are at the World Series! You can add some fuzzy socks, which may not be stylish, but certainly comfortable!

Halloween

Learn the moves to the iconic Michael Jackson song, “Thriller!

Halloween earns brownie points because it’s something we can depend on every fall, regardless of the weather. While it’s already a given that you will dress up in an eye-catching Halloween costume that will make you the winner of any costume contest, we collegiettes™ like to bump things up a notch. Looking to hit up parties Halloween weekend? Make sure you learn Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”, which you are bound to hear at least five times. Channel your inner Jennifer Garner in 13 Going On 30, and encourage the whole crowd to dance.  Need to learn the moves? Ballet Austin is offering a class where you can learn “Thriller” on October 26! (Check out balletaustin.com for more deets!) Not a dancer? Gather up some friends and have a scary movie marathon! If you are feeling nostalgic for childhood trick-or-treating, invite friends to buy a bag of fun-size candy bars and have them over for a candy swap! You can get a variety of candy all from the comfort of your living room; sounds like a sweet deal to me (pun intended).

Autumn Aromas

Just because we can’t enjoy true autumn weather doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy the autumn flavors! Now is the time that basically anything and everything will feature pumpkin, such as pumpkin spiced lattes, pumpkin milkshakes, or even pumpkin pancakes at Kerbey Lane! You can fill your house with autumn aromas, via seasonal scented candles that smell of spices, apples, or, you guessed it, pumpkin! If you’re turning into an Oompa Loompa because of pumpkin overload, take a break and head over to Halcyon Bar | Coffee | Lounge on 4th and Lavaca. They have mini s’mores roasting stations, which make for a perfect fall atmosphere. They also provide an assortment of hot drinks that are delicious! If it’s hot outside but you are craving hot cider or chocolate at home, crank up the AC and make a steaming mug, I won’t tell! After all, you have a right to pursue autumn!
