As I was surfing philly360.com, an online guide that highlights the many events in Philadelphia, it was through sheer luck that I came across an article that gave readers an opportunity to attend a very upscale and intimate fashion show. The article proposed that the first ten readers to RSVP to Carmelita Couture Resort Preview Fashion Show would possibly have a chance at front row seats at the event. It was only two days until the fashion show so I was uncertain if I would be granted the chance to attend, but I gave it a shot anyway. To my surprise, I got an email response less than 24 hours later that my name had been added to the guest list.
“A night of Art, Fashion and culture” is what designer Carmelita Martell guaranteed. On May 19th, she invited guests into her home in Society Hill to give us an insider look at her up and coming resort fashion line.
In attendance were buyers, sellers, bloggers and local celebrities. Amongst the celebrity list was local radio personality DJ Kendra G from Philly 100.3 Beat radio station and Mike Jerrick from the local Good Day Philadelphia.
Unlike the typical fashion show, Martell provided guests with an intimate and exclusive glimpse of her new line. The ethnic atmosphere of the environment set the tone for a global experience. Guests were treated to the sounds of Caribbean music by a local band called the Gabe Globalist and were served Latin-inspired food. Guests were up close and personal as models were posed in various parts around the house to display the wonderful work of Carmelita Couture. With every turn of a corner, you were swallowed into different cultures from the fabulous art pieces displayed on the wall to the African-inspired fabric draping the models.
Carmelita Couture told a story that was relatable to many walks of life. The overall theme of the clothes she designed can be described as a theatrical tailored looked. Her clothes were bold, colorful and different, yet ready to be worn on the streets. Some pieces include modern 60’s looks, rompers, which is her signature look and custom rainbow prints. My personal favorite was a white cocktail mini.
Martell not only opened her doors for a global fashion show, but also for the perfect networking event; business cards were being swapped from every direction. I went home with about 6 myself and kicked myself for not having any to disperse out. Lesson: a lady should never leave home without her business cards.
The event started at 6pm and went on until 8, with guests lingering on at the end to get the last bit of food that was left or to sneak another goody bag. I’m guilty of being one of the lingering guests sneaking two gift bags that included Martell’s business card, a 20% off coupon to her store located 17 N 3rd St. and cool nail polish from Blush.
The overall event was a success. If I could grade the event it definitely gets an A plus in my book.
