Another Friday night rolls around and there’s yet another frat party you’d rather not go to. You’re under 21, so there’s nothing else for you to do, right? Wrong! Although sometimes hard to find, having underage fun in the city of brotherly love is a definite possibility.
Bowling – I know what you’re thinking; you haven’t been bowling since the 7th grade. This isn’t your neighborhood bowling alley, though. Strikes Bowling Lounge, located on 4040 Locust Street,
even offers student rates. Bring in your ID and receive $1.00 off per game or a special $29 hourly rate! On Friday and Saturday nights from 9pm to 2am it’s usually $45 per hour, so that’s a really great deal. This place even has a “lane-side food and beverage service” and offers appetizers, sandwiches, and salads. It’s a positive glitch to your weekend routine and one that you’ll want to repeat again. Check out the website for more details: http://www.strikesbowlinglounge.com/
Under 21 Night Clubs – There are a few clubs in the city that cater to the underage crowd; some are 18 to party, 21 to drink all the time, and some have designated nights. A $10.00 cover charge and your student ID is all you need to get into college night on Wednesday at Woody’s. This gay bar, located on S. 13th Street, is always a good time when you want to go out dancing with your girl friends! Check out http://www.woodysbar.com/ for more details.
Every Sunday night is 18+ at Shampoo Night Club on Willow Street between 7th and 8th. They also have other designated underage nights, check it out
at http://shampooonline.com/events.php and sign up on the guest list! On Thursday and Saturday nights, Club 27 is 18 to party! It’s on Bank Street in Olde City; Check out http://www.club27philly.net/ for their schedule of events.
Dessert – There are some delicious places that you can go for a late night dessert in the city. Max Brenner’s Chocolate By the Bald Man at 1501 Walnut Street is open on Friday and Saturdays until 1am! Take a trip to Center City after dinner and enjoy “Crispy Chocolate Eggrolls” fondue or “The S’mores Concoction” with friends. See the options before you go athttp://www.maxbrenner.com/.
Scoop DeVille is this incredible ice cream parlor located on 1734 Chestnut Street. In addition, they offer an assortment of milk shakes and smoothies, and even chocolates and other desserts. Open until 10pm, I don’t see how you could say no, especially after you see all they have to offer
at http://www.scoopdeville.net/.
Never rule out a cultural experience. Friday night doesn’t always have to be about getting dressed up and going out late; you’re living in a beautiful, eclectic city, so why not take advantage of it?!
Art After 5 – The Philadelphia Museum of Art holds this event every Friday, from 5 to about 9. Enjoy the galleries in the PMA while listening to live international music on the first of every month and jazz music every other Friday. Just pay for general admission (which is free if you say you’re a Tyler student and show your Temple ID!)
First Friday – Olde City holds First Friday the first Friday (duh!) of every month. From 5 to 9, you can stroll the neighborhood while enjoying art galleries and possibly some light refreshments, at no cost to you (except for SEPTA tokens to get there). Rain or shine, First Friday is never cancelled, but in my opinion, it’s most enjoyable on a nice spring night.
Never forget all ages’ concerts and musical shows. In the warmer months, always check out what’s happening on Penn’s Landing, as they hold a free summer concert series and a multicultural series all summer long. View their website for dates:http://www.visitphilly.com/outdoor-activities/philadelphia/penns-landing/.
Also check out the Piazza at Schmidts in Northern Liberties, as they’re always holding outdoor events when the weather gets warm. See their schedule at http://www.atthepiazza.com/
