Many student organizations here at Temple University work towards the greater goal of making Philadelphia an even better place. One particularly strong group of students that strives to greatly help the community is Temple’s National Council of Negro Women, led by the organization’s president Jalisa Miller.
Â
NCNW’s mission is to “empower black women, their families and communities.” This organization emphasizes the importance of giving back to the community. However, their work is not entirely limited to black women. All NCNW chapters work to make their neighborhoods a better place for everyone.
Â
Miller, a senior-year marketing major, has been a part of NCNW since she was a sophomore. “I became heavily involved and realized that this was an organization that thoroughly embodied strong values,” Miller said. “From then on I knew [this] was something I wanted to be a part of, and the following fall semester I was the marketing and promotions chair.” Her passion to help others has made the club a stronger voice on Temple’s campus and beyond around Philadelphia.
Â
NCNW yearn to educate not just black women, but all other groups on issues that pertain to their lives, from money management to HIV/AIDS awareness. This organization promotes personal well being and encourages action within the community. Their unity and strength greatly influence the lives they touch through their service.
Â
Some of the work that the ladies of NCNW are currently doing includes a volunteer project with the Girl Scouts at Bright Hope Baptist Church in North Philadelphia. They mentor young girls and give them the support and guidance they might need for the future, especially in education and beyond. NCNW emphasize the importance of aiding the younger generation for a greater future.
Â
Temple’s NCNW also constantly has events going on in the area, and they have big plans for the upcoming year.
Â
“I think one of our main goals is just to be bigger advocates for things, social issues that are affecting the African-American community, to speak for those who can’t speak,” says Miller. NCNW also wants to bring awareness to health, financial, and political issues that many women face today.
Â
Not only has the organization touched many lives of Philadelphia residents, but being together and working together for a common cause as also changed the lives within the club too.
Â
“I have a sister-like bond with everyone who is apart of my organization, not just on campus but nation-wide. I know that I am apart of a strong history of women who were movers and shakers and stood for something,” Miller said.
