Introducing YouTube’s Next Singing Sensations: Cimorelli

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Stony Brook chapter.

You may or may not have heard of the singing group Cimorelli before, but if you haven’t, they are a group of six sisters originally from California who became famous primarily through their Youtube videos doing covers of modern pop songs. Ranging in age from 17 to 27, the six girls— Dani, Lauren, Amy, Katherine, Lisa and Christina— began their journey as Youtube sensations with their cover song of Miley Cyrus’ “Party in the USA” in 2009 (even though Dani, the youngest of the girls, was at the time too young to appear in the video). Since then, the group Cimorelli has risen to recognition in the YouTube community and elsewhere, coming out with tons of cover songs over the years as well as their own albums with songs they have written themselves.

I first stumbled upon Cimorelli way back in the summer of 2012, when Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe” was a thing and I was maybe a little obsessed with it. Turns out Cimorelli had done both a cover and their own parody of the song, both of which I was intrigued by. Subsequently, I fell down the rabbit hole that is Youtube, searching for other music videos they had done.

Over the years Cimorelli has certainly come a long way, from upgrading the quality of their cover videos to writing and producing original songs. With their own Youtube channel (of course), an official website, concerts and performances, and a growing number of albums, the six girls are moving onward and upwards. In recent years, with a growing fan base, they have also begun to open up to the community so that their fans can get a sense of who they are. In some of their videos each of the girls talks about their personal struggles, their inspirations for songs, and their advice on life. Personally, after watching so many of their videos over the years, I feel as if I know them very well, despite having never met them in person. Many of their original songs have also become an inspiration to me during my difficult times or bad days, such as “Pretty Pink” from their Sad Girls Club album, or “Hope for It” from their album, Alive.

If you’ve never listened to their music before, I highly encourage you to visit their YouTube channel and check out some of their videos! And even if their music doesn’t suit your taste (which is perfectly fine), I think something undeniable about Cimorelli is this: they are a fun-loving, honest, hardworking group of girls who want nothing but to share their talents and joy with the world.
