Independent Learning Week as Told Through Puppies

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St. Andrews chapter.

Independent Learning Week is finally here! While it is billed as a chance to focus on an individual project and to broaden our academic horizons, we all know this next week is basically a chance to catch up on sleep and try to meet our oncoming deadlines. And if you’re a medical student, there is a looming mid semester exam on the Monday of Week 7 (best of luck, my friends!)

So here is a brief look at what deadline time is like, as told through cute gifs of baby animals.

1. Trying to get organized is like trying to get out of a large metal bowl.

2. We all think we’ve finally understood that lecture or finally managed to remember those vocab words, and then you try to quiz yourself… A constant Sisyphean task.

3. You made that illustrious pledge to catch up on sleep, but find yourself in the midst of your third all nighter… Why are our brains so wide awake at 3 am and yet complete mush during the day?

4. After managing to finally organize your shit, you suddenly trip and all of your carefully layed out stationary and notes get absolutely messed up – an appropriate metaphor for my general life, as well…

5. So you’ve managed to set up shop at nice nook in the library and then someone tries to encroach on your space – gtfo.

5. And without fail, you will call your mother in the middle of the night, perhaps multiple times, for help with literally everything – emotional support, general reassurance, tips on how to boil water, etc..

6. There’s always that point where you think you’re going insane and yell at yourself in the mirror to GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER!

7. And lastly, when you’re finally done with your responsibilities and you and your friends get ready to re-join humanity… except you all keep falling asleep and opt out for a pizza and rom-com night!

Happy Independent Learning Week, St Andrews!

I am an American medical student at the University of St Andrews, Scotland. I have been an avid writer for several years, focusing mainly on creative writing. But I hope to be more involved in our university's culture, particularly by bringing interesting information to all of our students!
