Spring Break on a Budget

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Southern Miss chapter.

With Spring Break right around the corner it’s time to start making plans, but what if you’re spring broke? Luxurious beach getaways are nice but tend to be overrated and pricey, not to mention crowded. Lying on the couch all week is always an option, but if you give these substitutes a try you just might find this break to be the best yet. So, here’s your guide for Spring Break 2012 on a collegiette budget. Save money and explore new hobbies by trying one of these four alternatives!

1. Plan a Camping Trip.

With warm weather and sunny skies, spring break is the perfect time to gather your friends and head to the great outdoors. Camping is a real money saver, and what is more relaxing than exploring nature by day and singing Kumbaya around the campfire by night? Search online for campsites near you, and dig an old sleeping bag out of the closet. From hiking to swimming to making Smores, the options are limitless. Avoid waiting on delayed flights and fighting crowded tourist traps with a camping trip tailored just for you!

2. Create a Home Spa.

What lady doesn’t enjoy a little pampering? There is no better time than spring break! Call up your best girlfriends, light some candles and turn your own home into a spa for the day. You can make homemade invitations, and create a playlist of your favorite mellow songs to set the mood. Doing manicures, renting movies, eating and relaxing with your girls is a great way to unwind this break from the stress of school.

3. Explore Your Own Backyard.

Take this time to explore all of the touristy sites close to home you’ve always heard about but never tried. Spending the day at a local art museum is inexpensive and fun. You can also play tourist for the afternoon. Visit hot spots where tourists travel but locals never think to go. By contacting your local chamber of commerce or searching online, you’re bound to find something of interest that is close by and cheap. Sometimes even museums and public festivals are free. Don’t forget to check them out too!

4. Get Crafty.

With the rapid growth of do-it-yourself inspired sites like Pinterest, there are loads of artsy projects to get your hands on. With the chaos of classes, there is little time for art. Spring break is the perfect opportunity to let your inner crafter free. Whether it be painting, sewing, or trying hair tutorials and new makeup techniques, get your creative juices flowing and give it a try. With so many fun and thrifty projects, why not? Try searching for recyclable projects to save even more money, and turn something old into new this spring break!

So give these ideas a try for a successful spring break or come up with your own ideas on a budget. You don’t have to be a couch potato, and you don’t have to fall into the expensive, generic festivities to have fun. With some brainstorming, you can have a fabulous spring break with little money and a lot of imagination!
