8 Reasons a Plant-Based Woman is a Powerful Woman

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Soka chapter.

Whether you are a vegan, know a vegan, or would never consider being a vegan, there’s truth in the fact that vegan women are powerful and radiating. They think for themselves and act for the world, here’s how:

1. She is not a victim of corporations. When we think of major American industries brainwashing us with advertising techniques, our mind flips immediately to cigarette companies and sketchy investment techniques. But what about things like the “Got Milk?” campaign or Foster Farms ads that focus on family values? In reality, the meat and dairy industries have a vested financial interest in our consumption of their products. The money these companies put into lobbying and blinding the public rivals that of the fossil fuel industry.

2. She is a climate goddess. That’s right; she is making a huge difference in bringing down the effects of climate change. Animal agriculture is responsible for emitting mass amounts of fossil fuels (especially methane and carbon dioxide), deforesting millions of acres of rainforest, consuming tons and tons of water, occupying and damaging land all over the planet, eliminating species and driving them to extinction, and polluting our waterways. This means a plant-based diet is good for almost every aspect of the environment. In fact, it’s probably the easiest thing you can do to lessen your personal contribution to climate change.

3. She is in touch with the earth. A vegan woman knows what she’s eating and where it’s coming from. She eats food directly from the planet she lives on and operates inside. Her food is natural and so is she. She can see that the plants and animals that fill the world are more than just something for humans to consume and use and know that we are part of a system, not the rulers of it.

4. She has energy. So much more energy! She feels lighter as she goes through her days and is ready for anything. A plant-based woman is awake and excited to dive into each day. Instead of feeling full and tired after a meal, eating has its intended effect, and the food energizes her. She is ready to do schoolwork, work out, meditate, go out, create, and change. You have to try it to see this in action.

5. She is healthy. A plant-based lifestyle is so good and loving to your body. A plant-based woman has lower cholesterol and a decreased chance of cardiovascular disease, cancer (including breast cancer), high blood pressure, and diabetes. Aside from these effects, vegans also have fewer allergies, less susceptibility to migraines, and better working immune systems. Also, veganism can lower the harsher effects of your menstrual cycle. It also helps with aesthetic things, giving you healthier hair, nails, skin, scent, and even decreasing bad breath. She doesn’t just look good and work well; a vegan feels great too.

6. She is strong. There are so many amazing and strong plant-based female athletes. Take a minute to look up Heather Mills, Fiona Oakes, Meagan Duhamel, or Tia Blanco. And yes, they get enough protein. In addition to this, there are thousands of women who live healthy, strong, plant-based lives in addition to their other passions. The strength gained from a being vegan isn’t just physical, it’s also mental and emotional. There is a strength in standing for something you believe in and in living your truth every day. Vegan women kick ass!

7. She is compassionate. Vegan women have compassion toward animals and believe that all life is valuable. They live a lifestyle of peace and nonviolence, and they practice what they preach. Animal agriculture means that so much food must be fed to animals (to be eaten) and that food can’t go to people who are starving without it. When you consume animal products, you are preventing impoverished people (globally) from access to nutritious food and clean water.

8. She eats and makes delicious food! That’s right, being vegan is delicious too. Vegans get a lot of harsh words for eating less than delicious food, but once you access the creative possibilities of a plant-based home kitchen (even a dorm kitchen), it’s as if a whole new world of food has opened to you. There are thousands of wonderful plant-based recipes and restaurants to try. From ice cream and baked goods, to gourmet dinners and snacks, there is no shortage of recipes out there. It’s also a wonderful way to create a community. Cooking vegan food with your friends or eating out at a vegan restaurant can be an amazing and simple way to bring people together.

Overall, the plant-based lifestyle is a beautiful way to launch yourself into a happier, healthier, more compassionate and thoughtful version of yourself. It’s the love diet, the peace diet, the smart diet, and a fairly easy diet. You got this, kickass vegan woman!

Kaylor attends Soka University in southern California where she studies environmental science. She loves being outdoors, participating in political activism, cooking vegan food, researching (knowledge is power!) and creating. She is from Portland, OR.
Nellie Hultman is currently a sophomore at Soka University of America where she is studying Social and Behavioral Sciences. She is the Campus Correspondent for the Her Campus chapter at Soka. After living in 6 countries, she has developed a love for traveling, meeting new people, experiencing different cultures, and trying new foods (lots of it). She hopes to continue traveling the world throughout her life. She plans to attend law school after college, and she desires to build a life focused on inspiring, empowering, and serving others. When she’s not doing homework or thinking about ways to change the world, you can find her researching unsolved crimes, singing in the car, watching Seinfeld… or eating.
