SMU’s Guide to Away Weekends

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SMU chapter.

It’s away weekend season! That means weekends filled with boat parties, crawfish boils, and trips to New Orleans and Austin. Any Collegiette knows that an invite to any away weekend is a guaranteed time for fabulous activities. However, there have been away weekend disasters with terrible dates and events. In order to prevent such things from happening, follow these steps:

  1. Prepare for school in advance. If you have a test the Monday after you arrive back, do NOT go on an away weekend. Unless you have adequately prepared for the test ahead of time, going will almost guarantee you a bad grade on the test. Nobody successfully takes a 9 am test three days hungover. Nobody.
  1. Make sure you know other friends going. This. Is. Crucial. If you and your date fight, your date ditches you, or you feel uncomfortable, at least you have friends with you to hang out with. Anyways, it’s always way more fun with friends!

3. Be wary of blind date set-ups. These can get awkward. Sleeping next to someone you just met could be a tad…uncomfortable. But if you are set on going for the experience, make sure you have at least two close friends to hangout with. That way, if you and your date do not work out too well, you always have your girls.
