Skidmore Squirrel

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Skidmore chapter.

We sat down to chat with the not-so-average squirrel we have come to only know as: The Skidmore Squirrel.

Her Campus:  Having been a native for so long, have you come to establish a set daily routine?

Skidmore Squirrel:  I really have, I stick to it everyday.  At 7 AM, I wake up, preferably in a tree.  By 7:45 AM, I’ve scoured through every Case Green trashcan, maybe a few others.  Throughout the day I like to keep open time slots with activities varying from scaring students to following unsuspecting tours.  I’ll usually take a nap in the apple tree outside the library at 3 PM to establish that it’s my territory.  I’ll wake up again at 5PM and start jumping out of trashcans, dedicating my time to personally getting up close with students.  I’ll make sure to have stolen someone else’s off campus dinner by 8 PM and then call it a night by 10 PM.  Though on weekends I will make jump out night rounds.

HC:  Tell me about your favorite place to hang out on campus.

Skidmore Squirrel:  The trashcans by d-hall.   But I’m really not too picky; I don’t discriminate against any trashcan.  I also won’t discriminate against any trash not properly put in a can.

HC:  What do you like to look for when digging through all that trash?

Skidmore Squirrel:  Like I said, I’m not too picky.  I like unfinished ice-cream cones or Starbucks coffee residue, but not hazelnut.  I’m not actually a nutty nut squirrel.  If I’m lucky during the weekends I stumble upon some late night food from Spa.  Though I know I can always count on my go-to: cigarette butts.

HC:  How do you feel knowing you inspired the Ice Age character, Scrat?

Skidmore Squirrel:  Though I do feel inaccurately represented, because I’m really not one for acorns, it is humbling to consider that my simple lifestyle inspired a global sensation.

HC:  You’re really the only one to live here all year round, how do you like that?

Skidmore Squirrel:  I love the school year most.  There are so many students to scare – though my heart lies in freaking out First Years.  During the summer, it’s a little lonely.  I especially feel the void when hanging out by the d-hall trashcans – they’re never quite as full.
