Loving Your Body in College (and Beyond)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Ship chapter.

College is filled with so many exciting beginnings and new challenges. Juggling a full class schedule, making new friends, living on your own for the first time. It can be a lot, so it’s important to remember to put you and your body first.

So many women (and men) hate what they see in the mirror. They point out their flaws and obsess over their imperfections. The media isn’t helping either; size 00 models are gracing ads and strutting down the runway. Many have even claimed to have eating disorders and body image issues due to the standards set by the modeling industry and the media.

College is one of the most challenging places for someone to learn how to love their body. The “freshman 15” is not a myth for most, and being on your own for the first time means ice cream and pizza for dinner. Most college age students are still growing too, which also will alter one’s appearance.

But, I’m here to tell you. Gaining weight is not the worst thing in the world. Let me say it again for all the people in the back: GAINING WEIGHT IS NOT THE END OF THE WORLD. That boy (or girl) is not going to love you any less because you weigh more than you did in high school. And, your friends will be your friends no matter what size you are. There are so many more important things to worry about than fitting into those size 2 skinny jeans. Your weight does not define you.

So, if you’re looking for some body positivity and acceptance, you’ll find it here. Nourish your body with healthy foods you love. Find activities that get you moving and boost your adrenaline. Look up healthy tips online, and save fun workouts you want to try on Pinterest.

Start a habit of looking in the mirror every morning and saying 3 positive things you love about yourself and your body. You can carry these tips and ideas with you throughout college and beyond.
