Sweet Squamish Summer Getaway

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SFU chapter.

With the fresh scent of spring jogging our memories of hot sunny beaches, lush hikes, and other summer activities, it is nearly impossible to stay focused on papers, finals, and presentations. To simmer the stress of the workload, it is imperative to have an escape plan to reward yourself after you make it through the battle. While there are many beautiful places you can run off too, Squamish wins out as one of the best for Vancouverites. It is a short drive away and offers many different things to do.

If it’s an extra hot day, the Britannia Mine Museum could be a great way to cool off. You get to tour inside the actual mine, in the pitch darkness and discover the rich history of such a small ghost town.

The Stawamus Chief hike offers a very rewarding view. There are three peaks that you can climb with varying levels of terrain. It is advised to avoid weekends in order to enjoy a little more nature, and a little less people.

View the breathtaking Shannon Falls up close by taking the Sea to Sky gondola. Once you are to the top, there is hiking and walking trails, a suspension bridge, rock climbing, free tours, and even yoga.

Adventure like a real pioneer and drive aimlessly down dirt roads and trails. Find your own secret camping spot or stream to swim in. Just watch out for the pot holes.

After winding down from the days activities stop at the Howe Sound Brewery for some craft beer and fantastic food where you don’t have to give up the view of the Chief! You can even stay the night at the Inn if you’re too tuckered out to drive home the same day.

Overall, it’s important to have things to look forward to. The monotony of everyday life can wreak havoc on your motivation and daily fulfillment. Taking the same 95b line, eating the same Subway lunch and sitting in the same spot in the library can take a toll on a student. By planning a getaway, you can save your sanity and receive a rewarding payoff for all your hard work in the semester.
