21 Life Lessons Learned from “New Girl”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Scranton chapter.

If you have yet to be blessed by the Liz Meriwether creation that is New Girl, then I hope this opens your eyes to what you’ve been missing. It’s without a doubt one of the most underrated shows on television. The sixth season of New Girl premieres Tuesday, September 20t! (Plenty of time for you slackers to catch up.)

1. Cheating hurts everyone

It’s one of the most selfish things you can do. Cheating doesn’t just affect you and your partner; you most likely have mutual friends who are also going to be affected by the situation.

2. Never force yourself to move on

Everyone handles breakups differently. Don’t let others rush you into finding a rebound if you’re not sure that you’re ready.

3. Be the bigger person of your frenemy-ship

Kill ‘em with kindness.

4. It’s OK to be between jobs

I’m not encouraging unemployment, but try to enjoy your time off the grid!

5. Don’t “backslide”

Sometimes we rebound with an ex when we’re feeling lonely. Is the brief feeling of comfort really worth it? (Answer: Nah)

6. (Harmless) Pranking can be so much fun

Mess with your friends, but try not to sabotage a wedding or anything like that.

7. Advocate for yourself

You want a promotion? Go convince your boss that you deserve it!

8. Sex isn’t a competition

Don’t be deterred from going for it just because you feel inexperienced. Communication is the best way to calm the nerves and keep you from doing anything…crazy…

9. Recognize your friends’ worth

Tell the people close to you how great they are once in a while.

10. Along with #9, your friends are a blessing

Social climbing is shallow and a waste of time. Realize what you have in your friends!

11. Verbal communication isn’t everyone’s strength

Sometimes it’s hard to express your feelings, but some people show that they care in other ways. *Disclaimer: Under no circumstance are finger guns a proper response to “I love you.”

12. Compromise is key

You have to meet your partner halfway or tensions are bound to rise. And by tensions, I clearly mean a sexual standoff.

13. Judging by appearance is stupid

Don’t do it – the book almost never matches the cover.

14. Accept when you’ve done wrong

People tend to project their bitterness on others. It’s healthier for you and everyone around you to just admit that you did a bad thing. *Disclaimer: It also makes forgiveness a little more likely to happen.

15. Some people just suck

Never stress yourself out over the actions or characteristics of another person. Just worry about yourself, fam.

16. Make friends with a bartender

FREE DRINKS!!!!!!!!!!!

17. Push people the right way

If you love someone, you want them to be successful. Try not to force a friend into bettering themselves, just be supportive as hell.

18. Find love in a best friend

It’s obviously not the only way to do it, but it sounds pretty damn good to me. 19. Distance is inevitable

One of your best friends might move across the country someday, but don’t worry, they’ll still be at your wedding.

20. Don’t let your passions take a backseat

Go back to school. Travel Europe like you’ve always wanted to. Make the first move.

21. LOVE YO-SELF
