Tuesday, September 23 the Harley E. Flack Peer Mentoring program welcomed its 2014-2015 female mentors and mentees into the Eynon Student Ballroom for Ujima Opening Day Tea Ceremony. Ujima (the Female counterpart of the mentoring program) introduced 91 freshmen and transfer mentees.
The Dr. Harley E. Flack Student Mentoring Program provides participants academic, personal, and professional support throughout the course of their undergraduate career at Rowan. The program’s focus is to enhance students’ overall university experience; support students in developing core academic, personal, professional and cultural skills; and foster in students some core civic and leadership proficiencies that will serve them personally and professionally.
The tea ceremony was organized and planned by Gardy Guiteau, assistant director in mentoring and academic enrichment, along with ungraduated coordinators who belong to the Harley E. Flack mentoring program. Professors and employees of Rowan University were invited to attend as well as serve as a professional mentors to those in the program.
The tea ceremony took place within the ballroom. Students and guests were to sign in, pick their name badge and sit at their designated table. At the tables, mentees and mentors met up for the first time. The keynote address given by Rowan Alumni and Senior Account Exectuvie for Edelman, Adiya Mobley, whose words moved and inspired the audience.
After closing remarks, small white boxes with either purple or pink ribbons were given to guests to unwrap. Enclosed in the box were packets of teas for all to take home and enjoy with their mentee. The ceremony proved to be an elegant and uplifiting ceremony for the beginning of a new semester.
