Derek Sexton

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oswego chapter.

Interested in finding new clubs at SUNY Oswego? One of the newest clubs at school is the fishing club. Freshman Derek Sexton is currently the secretary for the club, with freshman Josh Collette as the president, senior Dan Eggert as the vice president and junior Andrew Graff as the treasurer.

Derek says that Josh and Dan did the work with Student Association to begin the club. The club was started to “promote the sport of fishing and to get people active in the sport while teaching new skills to those who may not be avid anglers, such as me,” Derek says.

The club tries to go fishing once every two to three weeks. Since it’s still wintertime, the club has gone ice fishing. This weekend, the club is on a trip at 1000 Islands. The first trip was two weeks ago to Sandy Pond.

Currently, the club has 38 likes on Facebook. New members are always welcome.

Other than participating in fishing club, the Rome, N.Y. native enjoys going to Tyler Hall to practice music-it is his minor, after all. If he’s not in Tyler, he’s playing cards or board games with some of his friends. “When the weather is as beautiful as it has been these past two days, however, you’re likely to find me outside walking around campus enjoying fresh air and sunshine!”

Even though he’s only a freshman, Derek already has plans for after college. He hops to put his journalism major to good use and become a sports writer. If writing doesn’t work out, Derek wouldn’t mind working in the restaurant business.

I'm a junior. I like to read, watch T.V. and sleep. Aaaand that's it.
