Summer Skin Safety

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Ohio U chapter.

Everyone craves that summer glow, but are you being healthy and careful while trying to achieve it? We’ve been hearing it for years- the sun damages your skin. But, are we really listening? Coming from a girl who gets burnt walking to and from class, I’m trying to help others keep their skin healthy and safe. Here’s a few safe ways to become a bronzed beauty.

SPF: Know which SPF works for your skin. Even people who tan easily need at least SPF 15 or 30. Without even trying you can protect your skin daily with SPF, even without sunscreen. Many brands and types of make up, lotion, and lip balm have SPF already in them.

Avoid Tanning Beds: As tempting as it is to be glowing in the dead of winter, tanning beds increase your risk for skin cancer indefinitely. Not to mention you could over use the bed and possibly form an addiction (it’s happened!). Maybe try a spray tan, instead. They often condition your skin while giving you a healthy glow.

Sunless Tanning Lotion: Who says you can’t cheat when it comes to beauty? Looking to get a head start on glowing skin for summer, an event, or just because? Sunless tanners are the way to go. You may think of them as messy, orange, and streaky but that’s hardly the case these days. Relatively cheap and better than they used to be, sunless tanners are definitely a healthy and easy way to keep skin safe, and bronze!

Now, we all know that a sunburn or two can be inevitable in summer, but preventing them is key. Use these tips to keep skin safe. If you notice any weird or abnormal looking spots on your skin (check freckles and moles regularly) see a doctor to get it checked out. Have a fun and healthy skin summer, collegiettes!
