In the famously icy words of Miranda Priestly from The Devil Wears Prada, “Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking.” Now that winter has almost decidedly come to an end, it is time to dig out your cute skirts, skimpy camisoles and the shorts you haven’t worn since we bid farewell to fall. Yet so many people fall into the alluring trap of the Spring Floral fever. For some of us, persistently sticking to the comfort of floral prints and typical Spring colors, provides us with the false notion that we are being fashionable. As an English major and a secret fashion enthusiast, there is nothing I hate more than cliches—except maybe awkward sock tan lines. Therefore, I have to agree with Miranda Priestly’s comment no matter how unnecessarily snarky it sounds. This spring, put your floral on hold, and turn to other equally Springy but often overlooked trends. While some florals are fine, don’t overdo it and avoid becoming a walking human garden—it’s Spring, the signaling of a new beginning—and if that doesn’t call for some new (fashion) experiments I don’t know what does.

Celebrate the return of the sun with daring cut-out dresses. What better way to flip off the cold, gray wintry days than to bare some skin to the sun’s glorious loving rays. According to Elle magazine, the colors of this Spring, oddly enough, are “black, white and icy pastels with hints of pink.” So keep your palettes minimalistic while rocking the most audacious dress you o

I’m in love with corsets. Perhaps this love stems from my nerdy obsession with everything remotely related to Game of Thrones, but regardless, I believe that corsets are making a return—if they ever officially left the realms of fashion at all, that is. Whether they are incorporated into bodycon dresses or worn as a top or crop top, the corset can have a surprisingly slimming and disillusioning effect on the eyes.

Shiny things attract light. Shiny things also attract people. Try throwing on something shiny and iridescent to balance out the neutral, heather greys and dull puffy coats we’ve all been hiding under for the past few months. Let the iridescent shine of your clothes announce the official end of a long winter.

Add a little flair—or should I say “flare”– to your wardrobe. This spring, throw in a few curve balls with full skirts and skater dresses. These items can help soften a grungy t-shirt or an old favorite denim jacket. Adding them to your regular articles of clothing can instantly transform an ordinary outfit into a Spring essential.

Maybe you’re not one for skin-baring dresses, belly-squeezing corsets or shiny look-at-me tops, but spicing up a plain outfit with an awesome piece of statement jewelry can do the trick. A cool chunky statement necklace or an arm cuff can help dress up the plainest of outfits—maybe even the floral ones—and make your Spring wardrobe infinitely more interesting.
