5 Websites You Need to Visit

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MSU chapter.

Computers and the internet have become a staple in our lives, especially on college campuses. Out on the web, there are over one billion websites, and more are being created each day. Here are five websites that everyone, especially college students, should visit.

1. FilmFish

As many people have experienced, finding something to watch at night can be a challenge. By having you type in a movie you like, FilmFish makes recommendations that are similar to that movie. If your favorite movie is “The Hunger Games,” it will suggest “Divergent,” “The Maze Runner,” “After Dark” and several other movies. If you want to see a similar genre or theme from that film, there is an option to see those results in a tab called, Similar Lists. If your favorite movie is “Suicide Squad” and you click on Similar Lists, it will bring up Quirky Superhero Flicks, Modern Marvel and DC and Not Quite Superhero Comedy. FilmFish allows you to find the perfect movie for your “night in,” in a hassle free way. No more fighting and being indecisive with your friends, FilmFish will do the work for you.

2. 10 Minute Mail

We’ve all been struck by the problem of needing to view a website, but needing to make an account first. Maybe you are looking up the latest trends or you need to see the psychology article for your research paper, but, in either situation, you know you don’t want to put in your email. The website is only something you want to visit once, and you don’t need any more junk email filling up your inbox. 10 Minute Mail is the solution to this. When visiting the website, it immediately gives you a random email address like “h3140108@mvrht.com.” 10 Minute Mail, like it’s name, gives you 10 minutes to use the email address, before you lose access to it. It is perfect for opportunities where you don’t want put out your own personal email, just to get spam in return.

3. Write Words, a Word Frequency Counter

As college students, we often have to write papers. This website helps you count the number of times you have used a single word in a body of text. Clearly, this website helps eliminate “be” verbs, overused words and any diction you don’t want included in your work.

4. UNiDAYS

Two words can describe a part of a college student’s life: stressed and broke. A lot of things are expensive, and all students should know where they can get discounts. This website is a one-stop shop for student discounts. It tells you the specific discount you can receive at places like Apple, ASOS, Urban Outfitters, Express, Levi’s and more. Helping students save the little cash they have is what UNiDAYS is all about.

5. SelfControl

Distraction is common among students of all ages, especially college students. We work from our computers which is both a good thing and a bad thing. The internet is at our fingertips, allowing us to access information about all topics, all around the globe. But, the internet also has its downfalls. It allows us access to websites that are just a disturbance when we need to crack down on our studies. Netflix, Twitter, Facebook and Reddit, along with many others, don’t positively affect our work. This is where SelfControl comes in. This is a free app that you can download on your computer. It allows you to block websites that are common distractions for a certain period of time. Until that timer is up, there isn’t a way to access that page – not even by deleting the application or by restarting your computer. There is a catch, however: this application is only available to people who use Apple computers. On the SelfControl website, the creators added links for people who use Windows or Linux. These include: SelfRestraint, Cold Turkey and SelfControl for Linux. If you want to prevent distraction on your computer, definitely check out SelfControl.
