Mizzou Clubs You Never Knew Existed

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mizzou chapter.
Ever wanted to start your very own “ Run the World (Girls)” club? Well you might just be able to. After completing a few steps in the application process, you can turn the org of your dreams into a reality. Below are a few of the unheard-of clubs here on Mizzou’s campus.
  • The cupcake fad that has taken the country by storm the past few years has made its way to MU. One day last fall, Ashley Crockett was running late to class and looking for a friend. When Ashley finally located her friend, she found her eating a cupcake. How does one have time to eat a cupcake when they’re late to class? Because she loves cupcakes. The two discussed their love for cupcakes on the way to class, and the Cupcake Club was born. The Cupcake Club only meets once a month but has about 70 members – more than many of our classes. The club brings cupcake lovers together to bake and learn how to decorate the mini cakes. They often hold competitions where some members bake cupcakes and the others sample them to determine a winner. Yummy.
  • The Fantasy Sports Club was founded last November, but did not launch until the spring semester. After playing fantasy sports alone for 10 years, Tobias Callaway decided he wanted to create an organization that would bring students together to compete. The Fantasy Sports Club gives students a chance to share interests while making friends over Monday night football. Although the club is currently only filled with male members, it has its arms wide open for female players. Show them what you’ve got, ladies, and put in a bid for your very own fantasy team.

  • The Mizzou Board Game Club began in 2009 as a way for people to be social and make friends. President Eric Aikin grew up playing video games alone and believes board games are a way for people to connect and interact with one other. Competing face-to-face can build friendships. Meet with Aikin and his team on Sundays from 5 to 8 p.m. if you feel you’re the Monopoly (or any other board game) champ. Just don’t forget to bring your game face!
  • Michael Andreani founded Eaters of Columbia this year. Even though it’s  the club’s first semester at Mizzou, Andreani is not new to the trade. He and his friends started the same club at his high school in Ohio, and they all decided to start a branch at their respective colleges. Members of Eaters of Columbia will head to a different restaurant every week and, well… eat. It’s a chance for students to try new food, as well as a chance for restaurants to gain new customers. Eaters of Columbia will also have monthly fundraisers where 10 percent of the money spent at the participating restaurants will go toward a food-related charity. The current 15 to 20 members haven’t started grubbing just yet, but they hope to hit the town within the next couple of weeks. Want to join? Then get ready to unbutton your pants and chow down.

In Columbia, she is a member of Kappa Alpha Theta women's fraternity, Mizzou For Malawi Steering Committee, and can be spotted on campus touring potential Journalism School-ers. This Chicago native loves a good Jodi Picoult book, trying new foods, traveling, and hitting the pavement for a run.
