4 Tricks To Hide Greasy Hair

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mizzou chapter.

You woke up late, there’s no time to take a shower, and your hair is a greasy mess. What’s the first thing you do? Reach for your Polo hat and call it a t-shirt day? Wrong. Here are four quick tricks to have your greasy, unwashed hair looking like you just walked out of the salon.

1. Dry Shampoo

The easiest way to fake shower fresh hair is with dry shampoo. After a slew of tests, NYmag.com recommends Oscar Blandi Pronto Invisible Volumizing Dry Shampoo Spray ($25). On the other hand, I use Big Sexy Hair Volumizing Dry Shampoo ($15) and it works exactly the way I want it to, disguising grease and allowing me to skip the early morning shower for 30 minutes of extra sleep. Be careful, if you apply too much of this stuff you will end up looking like you ran through a white frost that just won’t melt. The best way is to spritz about four times at your roots, then comb it down to the ends of your hair. Then, I always take my fingers and fluff it up at the top to give it a more natural look. If you like to press snooze about 4 or 5 times before you wake up, this will become your new best friend.

2. The Slick Back Ponytail

One of the easiest things to do is to just put your hair in a ponytail. Pull your hair back really tight, removing all bumps, and secure it into a ponytail. This looks a lot better if you place your ponytail higher up on your head. The oil in your hair will help keep your hair slicked back. Lightly spray with some hair spray and you have a couture look in about 5 minutes. This same thing can also be done with a sock bun.

3. Baby Powder

The use of baby powder to conceal greasy locks goes all the way back to your grandma’s high school days. Yet, done wrong, this trick can be disastrous, resulting in white lice looking clumps. So, to prevent that, I have created a few tricks to get the fresh hair results you want. First, just get regular baby powder such as Johnson’s Baby Powder ($4). Now your first reaction is going to be to take the bottle and shake over the top of your hair to mist the powder on top. Do not do this! The best way is to take a tissue, mist about 4 shakes of powder throughout the tissue, then place over your roots, evenly dispersing the powder. Then with your fingers, scrunch the tissue up throughout your roots, allowing the powder to spread throughout your roots. The tissue evenly spreads out the powder and soaks up some of the oil. After you have done this, I like to finish off with a little bit of fluffing and hairspray to add some volume to the roots. I know this sounds ridiculous, and you will probably get some comments from your roommate along the lines of “what in the world are you doing,” but trust me, this works.

 4. Beach Waves

There is nothing wrong with pulling off the beach look for your early winter morning economics class. The wonderful people behind the Free People blog have provided a great spray that you can mix yourself and creates the perfect beach waves. This sea salt spray will work with the oil in your hair to create a just walked off the beach in the Bahamas look in about 5 minutes. You will need an empty spray bottle to mix everything in, sea salt, coconut oil, and a tiny bit of hair gel. Free People recommend Himalayan sea salt and Nutiva Coconut Oil. The hair gel can be any standard gel. First, you fill the spray bottle with 8oz of lukewarm water. Then you add one teaspoon of salt to the water. Then add about half a teaspoon of coconut oil. If you plan on using this spray when your hair is already greasy you can do a little bit less of the coconut oil since your hair will already have natural oils in it from the grease. Lastly add a little dab, like ¾ of a spoon, of the standard hair gel. Mix it all up and you have the Free People spray sea salt spray that will save your life when you are running late in the morning. To apply this, spray about 3 or 4 times throughout the main part of your hair. I recommend staying away from overly spraying your roots because that will just add to the oil that is already there, instead just using the natural oil to blend with rest of your hair. After you have sprayed your hair, scrunch it up until you get the texture you want. Add a little hairspray and you are good to go!
