An Open Letter to Those Who Haven’t Let High School Go

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Maryland chapter.

This is for the ones who want to go back to the good old days; the ones filled with endless hallways and ringing school bells. This is for the ones who miss high school.

You were one of the cool kids in high school; the one who camped out in a tent on the first day of school just to get the best table in the cafeteria when the doors opened. You were the one who had a severe case of senioritis in the first semester. You were probably the one who dropped a letter grade in every class by the second semester. You were the one who showed up late to class and just never came in on a Monday. You were the one who spent every weekend like it was your last with a red cup in hand.

I know you were the one who forgot what it was like to stress out over missed calls from Mom; the one who showed up late to family dinners on Sundays, and never made it to movie nights. Your bedroom was always deserted, filled only with piles of dirty clothes from last week and empty cans of coke lying underneath the bed. I know your dad would knock on the door only to find you under the covers pretending to be asleep.

You were the one who counted the days until graduation, but never really wanted to graduate; the one who sits now alone in your college dorm wishing to be back where you were six months ago. You are the one who talks about high school like glory days in which you reigned. You are the one who’s still holding onto the past, never giving the future a chance.

I know you are scared of starting from the bottom, scared of what others might think and scared of being scared. But it will be okay because I know you. There’s some part of me in you, too. I know that it’s hard for you to let go of your high school roots, but there’s another side that you haven’t seen, where the branches are still growing and there’s room for you to sit. It’s not too late for you to jump on board and take in the present.
