A Letter To The Girl Who Doesn’t Have It All Figured Out Yet

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Marquette chapter.

Hey girl,

I want you to take a deep breath and just listen for a bit. So, you’ve done this whole college thing for a while now, haven’t you? I mean you’re technically half-way done, so shouldn’t you know what you want to do with your life? Yeah, you probably should, but the truth is that you don’t.

It’s stressful, huh? Every day, you’re either sitting in class or walking past your peers who seem to have it all figured out. You hear them talking about their internships and job offers lined up. You sit there smiling and listening, but ultimately thinking that you wish you had it as put together as they do. When you tell people how you’ve transferred schools and switched your major however many times, you plaster a smile on your face, as if you have it all figured out. You’ve gotta fake it til you make it, right?

I wish I had the answer for you. I wish I could tell you that there was some magical way to figure this all out. I wish I could give you a hug when times get rough and when you’re sitting in your room wondering what the heck to do next. Unfortunately, there’s no textbook for life.

What I want you to know is that you’re on the right track. Somehow, in the grand scheme of things, this is all part of your plan. Because now, you’re finally listening to your heart. As cheesy as it all sounds, following your heart is one of the greatest gifts we have. It’s helped me make some of the biggest decisions of my life so far, and it hasn’t failed me yet, so always remember that.

Stop dwelling on the past; what’s done is done. None of this was part of the plan. You thought you had it all figured out, but you didn’t, and that’s okay. All you can do now is learn from the choices you’ve made because, ultimately, they’ve led you to where you are at this moment. Sure, you may be a little behind, but better late than never if you’re following your heart.

Okay, one last thing. Never forget about your cheering squad. They have your back and will support you in whatever you do, so remember to thank them and keep them close. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and advice when you need it, because I know they’ll help you more than you think.

Now, take another breath and listen very carefully. Things are going to pan out and you’re going to be just fine. Know that you aren’t the only one who feels the way you do. Keep trying new things, continue exploring new places, and keep meeting people until that moment clicks. You never know who, where or what you’ll stumble upon that’ll guide you in the right direction. You’re trying and that’s what matters. You’re still figuring out who you are and who you want to be. I can’t tell you when that’ll happen, but believe me when I say it will.

Never stop working hard and keep doing you. Trust the process, but most importantly, trust yourself.

xoxo,

Pam
