Four Amazing Ways to Jazz up your Thanksgiving Treats with Candied Pecans

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Manhattan chapter.

Thanksgiving is one of the best holidays.  Who doesn’t like to eat?  Turkey, mashed potatoes, green beans, and pumpkin pie really make the end of November memorable.  Food truly brings us together.  For about four years now, I have been making candied pecans for my family.  They are delicious, sweet and salty, and can be used for multiple Thanksgiving treats.  Enjoy the recipe! ~

Ingredients:

1 Cup of White Sugar

1 Teaspoon of Ground Cinnamon

1 Teaspoon of Salt

1 Egg White

1 Tablespoon Water

1 Pound Pecan Halves

Prep Time: Ten Minutes

Cook Time: 1 Hour

1. Preheat Oven to 250 degrees F

Let’s get the ball rolling!

2. Mix the Dry Ingredients

Mix the sugar, cinnamon, and salt together in a bowl.

3. Mix the Wet Ingredients

In a big (ish) bowl, whisk egg white and water together until frothy.  If you don’t know how to get the yolk out of an egg, use the water bottle trick, or any other method you have available.  If you don’t have a whisk, you can use a fork.

4. Toss Wet with Dry Ingredients

In the same big bowl used to mix the wet ingredients, add the pecans.  Make sure they are well coated with the egg white mixture so the cinnamon-sugar can stick.  Add in the sugar mixture into the pecan mixture until everything is coated.

5. Bake

Spread sugar-coated pecans onto a baking sheet.  Bake in the preheated oven, stirring every 15 minutes until pecans are evenly browned for 1 hour.  I recommend using a big metal spatula to stir.  Don’t forget to stir, they will end up adhering to the baking sheet if not moved around every 15 minutes.  When the hour is up, scrape them off of the pan onto a plate, or a place too cool (this will stop the cooking process).

6. Enjoy!

Now, here is the fun part.  Once these are made, they last for a long time and can be used to jazz up multiple thanksgiving treats.  So, here are some ideas

1. Pies

One year, I lined the bottom of my pumpkin pie crust with these candied pecans.  It completely blew everyone away, and gave my pie an extra crunch.

2. Cake

This year, I’m making a cake and topping it with these pecans.  It adds a nice “cozy” flavor.

3. Ice cream

There will always be Thanksgiving leftovers.  So, put these on some classic vanilla ice cream, and you’ve got yourself a real treat.

4. Just eat them!

If you have extra after the holiday, these are a really good sweet snack.  You could add them to a fall trail mix, or just put them in a little to-go back for a quick pick-me-up.
