Skincare 101: How to Tackle 2017 with a Refreshing Routine

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at LIM chapter.

If 2016 has taught us anything, it’s that New Year’s resolutions are somewhat fleeting and hard

to stick by. Over the years, we’ve seen numerous promises and acclamations made by our friends, family, and sometimes, even ourselves, about countless diets that just don’t seem to work and fitness routines no one can keep up with. In fact, it might even be easier for you to start small and from the inside – a lifestyle that will boost your energy levels and beauty regime overall. With all the celebrations over the holiday seasons, you guessed correctly that your skin may be in need of another vacation from your vanity.

To start with the basics, your mother will keep telling you to drink more water and get a proper night sleep, and she’s right. Forget about the eight glasses, or a liter a day to reach the minimum amount. Any time water comes into your mind, BOTTOMS UP! Sleeping may be a crucial human concept but another important part of this diet is to also say goodnight to your mobile devices. The blue light from your computer and phone screens emits rays that will not only interfere with your eyesight, but also disrupt your sleeping cycle. Instead of falling asleep like you’re supposed to, your body will actually find it hard to fall into a restful slumber.

Now that you have a kick start to rejuvenating your skin and body, it’s time to concentrate on the ingredients you may already have at home, instead of spending the dollars you don’t have from buying all of those party dresses and chardonnays. Puffy eyes and discoloration? How about a green teabag cooled in the fridge overnight, and placed directly under your eyes for 10-15 minutes? Another neat trick is to do the same with a tablespoon.

This winter weather may be giving your skin and lips some serious scaly issues, but you may look to your kitchen and find pure and unrefined virgin coconut oil mixed with sugar for your sweet lips. This will not only peel away the dryness but plump them as well. For your body, I recommend brown sugar with olive oil; this concoction is sublime! There are so many homemade remedies you can make all on your own and using avocados and honey together would also make a great hair and face mask!

Most importantly, stick to your greens, fruits, and meats. The more refined and pure you feed yourself, the more it will show on your skin. To also kick that up a notch, start slow in the gym and make yourself sweat a little, your body will thank you!
