The Best of LFK: Late Night Food

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at KU chapter.

As a college student, chances are that at some point you are going to stay up way past 11 p.m. Maybe you’ll go out to a party or maybe you’ll just have to work or study all night. Either way, you’re probably going to get hungry. I know, “after eight you already ate” and all that, but we all need a late night bite every now and then to pull us through those awful all-nighters or to soak up those extra shots we probably shouldn’t have taken to appease our angry stomachs. If you’re like me, the hunger will strike about five minutes after most restaurants have stopped delivering food for the night. Ugh.

Don’t get too down; us lucky Jayhawks live in a town where quite a few restaurants thrive off of our late night munchies. Read on to find out which one’s made my Top 5 list.

5. Fat Freddy’s

What I love about Fat Freddy’s is that they go the extra hour. Most late night delivery restaurants stay open until 3 a.m., but on Friday and Saturday, Fat Freddy’s is open until 4 a.m.! That’s right, if you miss the optimal 1-3 a.m. late night ordering window, Fat Freddy’s still has your back. Along those same lines, Fat Freddy’s delivers until 3 a.m. every single day of the week besides Sunday (1 a.m.).  On top of that, they have a pretty good variety of food options on their menu.

4. Pickleman’s

The always-delicious Pickleman’s is open until 3 a.m. every single night. I love their grilled cheese sandwich paired with their tomato basil bisque soup, and I love that I can always count on them being open late even when I’m not sure what day of the week it is (don’t judge, we’ve all had those days). If you’re looking for a great sandwich and soup (or salad) combo, this is the way to go!

3. Jimmy Johns

Just like Pickleman’s, Jimmy John’s is open until 3 a.m. every day of the week. One of my favorite things about Jimmy John’s is they will deliver even if you only order one sandwich. Those restaurants that have a $10-15 minimum for delivery can make it so difficult if you know you really only want one thing. Order online or on the phone, and from personal experience I have to say, yes, the Jimmy John’s here in Lawrence really is freaky fast.

2. Pizza Shuttle

The ever beloved Pizza Shuttle is cheap, fast, easy and they take Beak-Em-Bucks. They’re open until 3 a.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 a.m. Monday through Thursday. You can order a personal pizza and get a great variety of toppings and sauces (try the cream cheese!). When you’re strapped for cash or just really want a pizza but don’t have anyone to share it with, Pizza Shuttle will never disappoint.

1. Tryyaki

My personal favorite late night delivery place in Lawrence is Tryyaki. They stay open until 3 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. Not only is the food delicious, but they give you SO MUCH. Think about the size of a big to-go box. They fill one of those with whatever entree you order (fried rice, stir fry noodles, etc). If you don’t have enough left overs for one or two more meals, I am thoroughly impressed. As a broke college student living off campus, this makes the most sense for me because I can stretch it out for a couple days. If you’re in the same boat, I highly recommend it.

If you’re already out when you get the munchies, there are quite a few other restaurants you can choose from that stay open for dine in. Some of these include: Pepperjax, Java Break, Fuzzy’s Tacos, Perkins and Pita Pit. Happy munching!

I am a Chicago native, and a student at the University of Kansas. I'm studying secondary education with an emphasis in English, and I hope to earn my masters in special education. My favorite things in the world are puppies, girl's nights in, and perfectly balanced caramel macchiatos. My least favorite things are clowns, writer's block, and going to the dentist.
