The first-year housing lottery has come and gone, but the effects of last week’s showdown have left scars we’re sure to remember throughout the rest of our Kenyon careers. Granted, perhaps us first-years had some unrealistic expectations; nonetheless, the blood bath that ensued on April 12th, 2014 shall never be forgotten.
Expectation: Being perfectly calm, collected, and ready to rumble.
Reality: Succumbing to the first-year jitters once realizing how many people are in the Class of ‘17 group (seriously, we’re a large class).
Expectation: Starting the first-year lottery at 3:30 PM.
Reality: Starting the first-year lottery at 5 PM.
Expectation: Being out of the KAC after an hour, tops (hopefully in time for dinner and the a capella concert.
Reality: Staying at the KAC for four hours (right on time to start the Relay for Life event.
Expectation: Happiness and camaraderie amongst classmates.
Reality: Succumbing to cheap tricks in order to get that suite in Caples.
Expectation: Getting one of your top ten room choices.
Reality: Watching every room you ever loved disappear before your eyes.
Thankfully the class of 2017 made it out of the housing lottery practically unscathed – for the most part, anyway. After all that blood, sweat, and tears nearly 30 of the rising sophomores still don’t know where they will be living during the next school year. But hey, at least we all went through this together!
