I Tried a Sugar Detox and This is What Happened

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JMU chapter.

Being a college student with a sweet tooth can get exhausting at times. With all the great dessert options readily available, it makes it hard to prevent myself from “having a treat” once in awhile. After doing a bit of research, I decided to try a week-long sugar detox to cleanse my body of added sugars and swap fruit for desserts. Here is a breakdown of my first three days and what I thought mid-week.

Day One

It was kind of hard to avoid added sugars because sugar is in literally EVERYTHING. I picked up a bag up chips to go with my sandwich and that alone had a few grams of sugar in it. I decided that cutting out sugar entirely wasn’t going to be realistic for a girl with a college meal plan like myself. So, I opted to keep my sugar intake at under 10 grams per meal.

Day Two

After my first day of cutting out sugar I slept amazing! I also stopped having headaches in the morning which was interesting. Sugar also has a habit of making me feel dehydrated, so I found that by staying away I didn’t need to apply as much chapstick throughout the day.

Day Three

I saw some minor results in the mirror when I woke up in the morning. My stomach had shrunk down a little, and my skin looked super clear. I didn’t try this detox to lose weight, but it didn’t hurt to see some improvements! I went to study at Starbucks today, so I opted for a chai tea latte with sugar-free vanilla syrup. I usually order one of the teas, but I was pleasantly surprised by this! It’s now one of my go-to drinks in the morning.

Wrap Up

I definitely saw some results within just three days of the challenge and intend on implementing some of what I learned into my everyday routine. Like my mom always says, everything in moderation!
