How to Eat Healthy on a Budget

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at IUP chapter.

Eating healthy every day is a struggle. When you are on a budget, it can be ten times harder. Healthy foods can be highly expensive, especially when you buy everything all at once. Many times, the thought’s that go through my head while shopping is “Well the Little Debbie’s are only a dollar so that would keep me in budget.”, “The family size bag of chips is the better deal.”, “Do I really need to be doing this?”.  Here are a few ways to stick to your healthy lifestyle and keep you on budget.

1. Meal Plan

Meal Planning can be one of the most fun, interesting, and frustrating things a person can do when trying to get healthy. Figure out the meals you would want to eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. While doing this, make a chart, it will keep you more organized.

2. Make a list

Making a list might be one of the easiest yet hardest things to do. Start out by thinking of the meals you might make. Don’t write any junk you would usually get on the list. Make sure to include everything you need, even non-food related items, this will help you not go down any aisle you don’t have to.

3. Go down the right aisles

Don’t go down any aisles that you don’t have to. If you do, most likely random items will end up in your cart, slowing hiking your budget up. Figure out what aisles you need to go down, grab what you need and walk away.

4. Buy Frozen Fruits and Vegetables

Some people have negative thoughts when it comes to frozen fruits and vegetables. What some people fail to realize is that the frozen fruits and vegetables are more nutrient dense than fresh fruits and vegetables. Not to mention they are a lot cheaper.

5. Buy Generic Food

I always look for the “Great Value” brand at Walmart or the generic brand at any store. It’s a few dollars cheaper and tastes almost the exact same. You have to save where you can and it will add up to a few extra dollars in your wallet.

6. Look out for Coupons!

Coupons are key when trying to save money. Go get the Sunday Newspaper, grab a pair of scissors, and have at it. The amount of money you can save with coupons is superb.
