6 Great Summer Getaways For Students

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

College is often referred to as the “best time of your life.” Although the memories from college will live on forever, it’s really the people you make those memories with that make them so special. So why not spend the summer making more memories? With minimal costs and commitments, summer is the perfect time to get away from it all. Although Europe may be out of reach, check out these hidden gems and hit the road.

Albuquerque, New Mexico

Best known for the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, historical architecture and beautiful scenery, Albuquerque has a ton to offer if you’re looking for a unique vacation spot! As the ballooning capital of the world, riding in a hot air balloon is a must. If heights aren’t your thing, try exploring Sandia Peak or Old Town.

Colorado Springs, Colorado

For the more outdoorsy bunch, take a road trip to Colorado Springs where you’ll run into Pikes Peak at a height of 14,114 feet. Take a hike through Garden of the Gods and cool off in the fresh water of Seven Falls, a cluster of waterfalls. You can also stop by the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo and spend some time with the wildlife. Even if outdoor activities aren’t your thing, the sights and sounds of Colorado Springs will sure take you breath away.

San Clemente, California

Nestled between Lost Angeles and San Deigo, San Clemente is the perfect beach vacation destination. San Clemente is prefect if you’re looking for a low-key vacation spot. Try walking the pier around sunset, shopping on Del Mar Street and catching some fantastic waves in one of the premier surfing spots in the world. Drive to LA in about an hour and hit up Rodeo Drive if you’re feeling fabulous!

Nashville, Tennessee

If you’re a music lover of any kind, Music City should be your next stop! Nashville not only offers an amazing music scene, but also historic landmarks, art galleries, plenty of boutiques and some of the best BBQ you’ll have in your life! If you’re really into country music, you might even hit up The CMA Music Festival June 8-11. Going to school in the Midwest, sometimes we all need to experience a little southern hospitality ourselves!

Austin, Texas

Austin’s Sixth Street is not only one of its most historic streets, but is also home to tons of life music, bars and art. Sixth Street is the perfect place to go for a little inspiration before heading back to school! While you’re there, head to Hamilton Pool and swim in natural waters surrounded by stunning waterfalls.

The Grand Canyon, Arizona

The Grand Canyon is one of America’s most iconic landmarks so why not visit it with your best friends? With both the north and south rim open in the summer, you’ll have plenty of things to do including hiking, camping, kayaking, rafting, train rides and much more!
