Mr. Right vs. Mr. Right Now

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at George Mason University chapter.

We’ve all been there. Maybe it’s because you’re bored, or because he lives three doors down. Maybe it’s because you convince yourself that you can get used to him texting ‘c’ instead of ‘see,’ even though it secretly kills you inside. Whatever the reason may be, you settle. Settling is never good, especially settling for Mr. Right Now. Maybe this Mr. Right Now character can turn into Mr. Right…eventually. But most likely, another Mr. Right Now will appear at a party late one night, and it’s on to the next one for you. This guy might be so incredibly cute that you decide you can look past the fact that your bestie spotted him wearing a white turtleneck at Starbucks…until he ditched you to watch the State of the Union…

Whatever the reason may be, you go through the motions with guy after guy, hoping for one who will mix the game up a little bit. The settling can get tiresome, and girls try too hard while guys don’t seem to try quite hard enough. And then the most recent Mr. Right Now tells everyone he broke up with you as the semester comes to an end after two weeks of a casual spring fling (because you were really bored and the long-awaited warm temperature got to your head). Oh, the life of a collegiate dealing with the average college male…

So you decide you’re done with every Mr. Right Now out there. Whether it’s because there finally is no Mr. Right Now or because you truly are tired of trying, don’t be afraid to take a break. So many girls get caught up in going to their crush’s frat party week after week or timing their walk down the stairwell perfectly in hopes of catching the hot tennis player’s eye who walks that way after practice. Of course it’s fun to daydream, giggle with your friends, and pick the perfect skirt and tank combination for your future husband; but maybe you should be picking that outfit out for yourself because it makes you feel good. It’s hard not to be boy crazy because, well, we’re girls after all… and boys are cute. And what girl wants to turn down an excuse to curl your hair and put eyeshadow on for a boring art history class?

But as I’m sure as you’ve heard before, when you stop looking, it’ll come. Maybe the guy who takes your order at Starbucks did notice your pretty smile, asks you on a date, and before you know it, you’re head over heels, and you can’t remember the last time you have been this happy. But in the meantime, have wine nights with your roomies, ace your midterms, and volunteer for a cause you never thought you had time for. Dance alone, read a book that makes you wonder why you stopped reading so much in the first place, and get fro-yo with your best friend. And yes, you can also use this as an excuse to distract yourself by watching the entire first season of Revenge and secretly (or not so secretly) wishing you were Emily and had Jack and Daniel both frolicking with you on a beach. Plus, you won’t hesitate to eat all the pita chips and hummus without worrying your date is judging you. The many perks of being single…

Take time to discover yourself, and then maybe Mr. Right will discover you. He’ll make you laugh, call when he doesn’t have to, and give you unexpected compliments. You’ll spend hours doing nothing together while listening to the same songs on repeat and wonder where the time went. When you realize your connection with Mr. Right, you’ll wonder time and time again why you put up with the Mr. Right Now who made you watch Ratatouille while you thought to yourself how much you absolutely hated cartoons. Though keep in mind that a collegiette usually has to kiss a lot of frogs to find her prince.
