Whether you stand with Trump, Hillary, a third-party candidate, or no one at all, voting is a vital duty as a citizen. This may sound over exaggerated or like I’m coming on too strong, but there are plenty of good reasons why college women should get out and vote this November.
1. It is one of the most important ways to exercise your duties and rights as a citizen
This may sound lame and not very enticing, but hear me out: As a country with a democratic foundation, what is the point if the citizens can’t have a say in who is in charge? Some people even consider abstaining from voting as unpatriotic, so exercise your rights!
2. Having the right to vote was fought for and should be exercised
American women have had the right to vote for less than 100 years now. Women just like us struggled and fought for years to have the 19th Amendment added. Thanks to women’s suffrage, we have the right and power to let out voice be heard today. What’s stopping us?
3. Your vote can make a difference
I know it doesn’t feel like your single vote will make a difference, but it can. Votes cast go to the electoral college who then vote for your chosen candidate, and in the end, the popular vote is determined by state. Numbers matter in this case, the votes can make a difference.
4. College students have the lowest voter turnout
Statistically, the younger age groups have the lowest rates of voter turnout and college students are among this demographic. It has been shown that 18-24 year olds tend to be the least enthusiastic when it comes to voting. This is problematic because this age group also tends to be the most passionate about politics and its corresponding issues. When the two aren’t put together, there is no progress. It is important to break the statistic! When there is participation, there is change. Power lies in numbers.
5. Registering to vote isn’t as complicated as it seems
You can register to vote right now in the state of Virginia and you don’t even have to leave the comfort of your bed to do it! It’s a simple process and the deadline is quickly approaching on October 17th. If you’re from another state, the absentee ballot form is online as well!
All in all, it is important to get out to the polls in November. Registering to vote is easy and quick, you will actively be fulfilling your civic duty by voting, and you even get a sticker for doing it. There are no excuses! The next time you see those people around campus with clipboards asking you to register to vote, seize the opportunity. This is an interesting election to say the least, and whichever side you are on could really use your voice.
