Lindsay Smith

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

Name: Lindsay Smith

Year: 2nd

Degree: English

What you’re involved in on campus:
Not much….. I often crash socials with friends!

How would you describe your music style?
It’s kind of a mix of indie folk pop.

When/where can we net see you perform?
Mama Stones, 18th June, various other gigs, then the YNOT festival in Derbyshire!

What is your opinion of the music scene in Exeter?
It’s a really great place to play in, everyone knows each other, and there are some really talented people! It’s quite a small city so obviously, its not as challenging as say, London. But I think the Firehouse and Mama Stones are brilliant venues to play at.

What are your plans for the future regarding your music?
I’m currently working with Daylight Music Productions in Exeter to develop myself as an artist. We have formed a band to play at Mama Stones on the 18th and its full of really talented close friends, so that’ll be really fun! I’ve also had the opportunity to work with brilliant individuals such as artists and photographers. If I could go on tour with such amazing people and go and sing our songs to a crowd in a different city every night that would be epic. To travel and to play music and to have someone else know the lyrics to your song – thats the dream.

What is your opinion on TV talent shows e.g. X Factor/The Voice?
I think that they are great platforms for people to showcase their talent, but they can also be the kiss of death so are very risky to go on! I mean, no one wants to listen to a washed up tv reality star. I find that as the shows go on an artist loses their identity – its not about the music, its if you can do everything else, like if you have a sob story and if you can dance! And i certainly can’t dance, and I don’t have a sob story! You don’t become what you want to be, you become what someone else wants you to become, which is why its great for me to be working with Daylight Music Productions. They are helping me develop as an artist, not telling me what to become. I’d rather pursue my own style of writing and music and play original songs live, rather than covers and songs other people have written for me. If I succeed on my own merit and because of good original music, that’ll be the dream come true!

Favourite band/musician:
KT Tunstall, Florence and the Machine, Katy Perry.

Favourite song:
That’s so hard! It changes every week! I love the lyrics to Toothpaste Kisses by The Macabees though.

How would you describe your personal style?
I love wearing dresses, they are just so easy to pop on with minimal effort, and they are really feminine. I’m attracted to lots of colours so I guess theres a lot of variation in my wardrobe – I have a pac man cardigan which is the best thing ever. Vintage stuff is great too! My boyfriend seems to love this denim shirt I have and other really casual stuff, so I often wear a mixture of really girly clothes with some sort of messy twist to keep him happy!

Favourite moment from Exeter this year?
Loved all of it – but dressing up as a crab and heading to Arena was great fun. Anything where my friends are there is awesome.
