Beat The Mid Term Blues With Glittering Fireworks!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

What better way to get rid of those mid-term blues is there than looking at all that sparkles and glitters?! It is fortunate for us, then, that the mid-term slump comes around the start of November, a time commonly associated with fireworks to commemorate the foiling of Guy Fawkes’ gunpowder plot of 1605. Can you get much more sparkly and glittery than thousands of tiny coloured sparks lighting up the night sky? Bonfire Night is a traditionally British celebration and very few countries that were not part of the British Empire at some point celebrate it today. However, that doesn’t mean that we can’t take this opportunity to look at the some of the best places to see fireworks around the world – do we really need the excuse of Bonfire Night in order to look at some stunning firework displays that happen all over the globe?

Victoria Harbour, Hong Kong

Thousands of spectators line the harbour every year to welcome in the Chinese New Year. As the Chinese invented gunpowder and therefore fireworks in the mid 1st century AD you would expect the show to be incredible – and it definitely does not disappoint! 2013’s display lasted for over 20 minutes!

Sydney Harbour Bridge, Australia

Sydney also know how to do New Year and therefore fireworks in style! Sydeny’s local council provide various vantage points around the city for the best views. And it’s not just the bridge that fireworks are set off from; in 1999 as part of the Millennium celebrations Sydney decided to start a Harbour of Light Parade – fireworks are now set off from different points all round the harbour and various lighting effects are used including boats sailing the harbour that are entirely covered in lights, making a beautiful spectacle.

Niagara Falls, Canada

Too good for just one night a year, Canada’s longest running firework series happens between May and September every Friday, Sunday and National Holiday at 10pm, often with free concerts in Queen Victoria Park to get everyone in the party mood. The fireworks compliment the illumination of the falls with multi-coloured lights making for one dazzling light show!

Las Vegas, NV, USA

When it comes to going OTT where better than Sin City itself? It’s no surprise then that their 4th July fireworks show is difficult to rival. With displays throughout the holiday weekend. This year the holiday fell on a Thursday so bars, casinos and hotels started their celebrations as early as 29th June. Caesar’s Palace of the Hangover fame launched their fireworks from their Roman Tower. With that many establishments setting of thousands of pounds worth fireworks every night for a whole weekend, you would be in for one hell of a treat!
