Trend Update: White After Labor Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emory chapter.

It’s been beaten into our heads since the days of Limited Too and long denim jean skirts.

“Do NOT wear white after Labor Day.”

I’m pretty sure this been a fashion rule of thumb for as long as I can remember. But here’s the great thing about fashion: rules change.

With the entry of winter white into designer collections all over the globe in the 2012 collections, the trend was bound to take itself into the spring, summer, and now into fall 2013. Although white has burst through that early September barrier, winter white’s thick, textured fabrics and summer’s light cotton or crocheted pieces are no match for fall. Finding the “correct white” is essential.

If you’re someone like me who owns way too many white, cream, and ivory tops, this shift should make you super excited. That basic white button-down you own is now TRENDY.

The easiest way to do white after Labor Day is to try a white button down with anything you own: those rust colored jeans you’ve been waiting to break out, black or denim for a classic feel, or a cute printed skirt. (Check out Glamour’s special edition 1,001 Best-Ever Fall Dos & Don’ts for more ideas!)

Kate Wierman pairs her breezy white sleeveless top with cobalt cropped pants (another color trend we love!)

Sarah Beach also pairs her summery white tank with a cute, flowing high-waisted blue skirt.

Don’t be afraid to break the rules.
