Printed Shorts: the Do’s and Don’t’s

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emory chapter.

It’s safe to say that spring has finally sprung. With temperatures hitting the low eighties this past week, all of Emory busted out their favorite shorts and tanks to celebrate the arrival of warm weather. While classic denim cutoffs and pastel linen shorts are always a good option, sometimes it’s fun to change things up with a cool pair of printed shorts. That being said, not all printed shorts are created equally. It’s super easy for this trend to overwhelm many women’s frames–especially if you’re short. Make sure that the shorts are the right length for your frame. No matter your shape or size, stick to looser silhouettes and color palettes that complement your skintone to make this trend work.

If you’re nervous about trying out the trend, stick with smaller prints like baby flowers or polka-dots to get your feet wet. Pretty much any fabric looks great with these prints, but some of my favorites include silk, linen, and soft cotton. Pair them with a black tank and cool flats for class for a more eclectic version of this classic spring outfit, or dress them up with pointy-toe pumps and a flouncy blouse for a night out.

If you’re feeling a little more daring, try a larger print like the ones seen above. The giant daisies may seem overwhelming, but when paired with a plain black tank top, they become surprisingly chic.  If the bottom is as flouncy as the ones shown below, try pairing them with an on trend crop top. Showing an inch or two of abs makes the outfit more proportional and balances out the super loose bottoms. Plus, it’s a great way to show off the abs you’ve defined after all of your hours at the WoodPec. To accessorize, add on minimalistic black sandals and a floppy black hat for some time in the sun on McDonough.

For the funkier fashionista, a larger, Moroccan-inspired pattern is a unique way to show off your spring style. The shorts are so bold that you only need a minimalistic tank and some killer slip-on sneakers to create a eccentric look. So ladies, it’s officially time to store your winter sweaters away and put your funkiest shorts on display!
