Ali and Morgan (both ’16), Creators of Emory’s Spoon University

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emory chapter.

Ever wondered what the healthiest meals around campus are? The coolest new restaurant for your birthday dinner or where to find the best sushi roll? Check out Spoon University, created by Her Campus Emory’s own Ali and Morgan, both sophomores.

Her Campus Emory (HCE): What is Spoon University?

Ali Warrack (AW) and Morgan Manella (MM): Spoon University is the only online food publication for college students and by college students. We cover everything from trendy local restaurants to on-campus dining tips. Our goal is to help encourage exploration and conversation about food to help students navigate what is going on in their dining halls, tiny apartment kitchens, and eateries around campus.

HCE: How did you guys become involved?

AW: Over winter break, my friends from the University of Texas at Austin were telling me about how they had just gotten involved in Spoon. I thought it was a great idea and since ATL is so foodie, it seemed like it would do really well at Emory. I knew the two positions needed to start it were a Business Director and Editor in Chief. What better team for that than me and my roommate, Morgan!

HCE: What are your responsibilities?

MM: As editor-in-chief, I am responsible for reviewing and editing articles submitted by writers each week.  I help brainstorm story ideas, and I assign writers articles about food recipes, local restaurants, events, and on-campus dining.

AW: My responsibilities as business director are to oversee the marketing and PR team.  I organize all of our social media campaigns and make sure people on campus know about Spoon.  My most recent task has been trying to make Spoon the coolest club on campus (along with Her Campus of course).

HCE: What are some of Spoon University’s accomplishments this past year?

AW and MM: We are currently working on launching the Spoon site. Our writers, editors, photographers, and business team have worked very hard to create compelling stories, take mouth-watering photos, and promote Spoon on various social media sites.

HCE: What are some of your plans for the upcoming year?

AW and MM: We would love to see more people get involved with Spoon in the upcoming year!  We also hope to build a solid readership and become a popular site that students turn to for food advice and interesting stories.

HCE: What are some of your favorite Atlanta meals?

MM: My personal favorite Atlanta meals have been at JCT Kitchen, Aja, and of course the classic Murphy’s.

AW: It’s so hard to pick my favorite Atlanta meals since there are so many amazing restaurants here.  Some of my recent favorites have been The One Sushi Plus and Chops.  And of course, you always have to end the meal with some Yogurt Tap.

HCE: How can students get involved?

AW and MM: Students can get involved by contacting us at morgan.manella@emory.edu or awarrac@emory.edu.
