Us college kids have heard it about a thousand times. Stop procrastinating! Don’t wait until the last second, because it sets the pace for everything to come. So, why do we continue to do it? Cooking, cleaning, homework, projects…The world would stop dead in its tracks if I decided to get something done in a timely manner. It’s hard to will yourself to do something you know you really don’t want to do, everyone knows that. But, once you start procrastinating one thing, you could end up spiraling out of control. The next thing you know, that one homework you forgot to turn in last week, turns into the third missing homework of the semester. There goes that letter grade! And that deadline you had to meet for your internship, but figured you could put off? Looks like another disappointing discussion with your supervisor.
So what do we do? Well, we’ve all read those “Top 10 Tips to Organize Your Life” articles, but what are the odds of you starting an exquisite bullet journal and practicing intense self-care on the daily? I’m not saying you shouldn’t, I’m just saying, how many of us have time for more than 2 meals a day and 5+ hours of sleep? Not many. In reality, the least we can do is reconsider our values, really think about what’s important to us. If you can’t 100% commit to something, like a new club or an extra course, then don’t bother doing it! Obviously you should try to push yourself to new heights and blah blah blah, but when little things start to add up, they get in the way of much bigger things. Sometimes, that extra class you took because you thought it would be a “GPA booster”, is the very class that prevents you from being successful in a required course, and that can get messy.
Do yourself a favor and stop procrastinating. The sooner you get your stuff together, the better. Take a breath, you’ve got this.
