Gust-o Dry Bar Review

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emerson chapter.

Last Saturday I had the opportunity to visit Gust-o, dry bar on Newbury Street that offers blowouts, makeup applications, private parties, and even moisturizing paraffin treatments.

The unforgettable bright pink and red-orange accents of the salon had me immediately enamored, but when I was greeted by a friendly and charming woman offering me a seat along with coffee, tea, or water after I gave her my name, I knew I was in for a memorable experience.

I flipped through the lookbook that featured hairstyles from their “Mane Attraction” menu.  With styles ranging from super straight and glossy to voluminous curls, I couldn’t decide on what I was in the mood for.  Then, my lovely stylist, Jessica, greeted me and showed me to my chair.

Before we even began, she asked me about the texture of my hair and what types of products I like to use in my hair, if any.  Pre-relaxing shampoo and condition, Jessica showed me the products they use in their salon: Living Proof and Oribe.  Being an Oribe admirer, I asked her about the products in the line and decided I needed to try them out.  I’m usually a Bumble & Bumble or DevaCurl girl, but I thought I’d give myself the royal treatment and see if I was willing to make the switch.

After talking for a while to get to know my hair, and me, Jessica took me for my shampoo and condition in the back of the salon.  Gust-o has adorable small ottoman-type pieces for you to rest your feet on while your stylist is washing your hair, so I felt completely relaxed.  Let me tell you, it was so lovely I could have fallen asleep!

Finally it was time for my blowout.  After browsing the lookbook and asking Jessica’s input we decided on “Siren,” a blowout with long and loose curls using minimal heat.  Before she started styling my hair, Jessica brought me over to the paraffin wax, had me dip each hand in one at a time, and then covered them with plastic and little mittens so my hands got a little T.L.C. while she did my hair.

Jessica started by running a dollop of Oribe “Supershine Moisturizing Cream” through my hair, sectioned off my lock, and used a round brush to give me loose curls.  After each section was done, she curled it up and clipped it to my hair.

She continued with each section, explaining to me what she was doing to my hair as she was doing it so I could practice the look at home myself.  When finished, she let my hair loose from the clips, sprayed the “Après Beach Wave and Shine Spray” and finished off with the “Superfine Hair Spray.”

I left the salon with gorgeous hair and silky smooth hands as confident as could be!  Jessica and the entire Gust-o team were wonderful.  They made sure I had a list of the products used on my hair as well as tips on how to make my blowout last.

If you have a special event, a hot date, or want to pamper yourself like me, I recommend stopping by Gust-o.  Their blowouts are super affordable at just $35 compared to other salons in the area, and did I mention they have a cute little blog you can check out here.
