Tips for Surviving the End of the Semester

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Dickinson chapter.

As we finally approach the week before Thanksgiving break, it’s safe to say that the semester is quickly coming to an end.  The lead up to finals is always overwhelming given the endless amount of responsibilities present in everyone’s lives.  While persevering through the last section of classes can prove to be quite challenging at times, there are strategies that can help you master your busy agenda.  Keep in mind the following points:

1) Manage your time wisely

Although there are several assignment deadlines approaching at the same time, it is important to make sure that all homework is completed in a timely manner.  Set goals and deadlines for yourself so that you can effectively plan out your schedule for the rest of the semester.

2) Treat yourself to study breaks

Even during the most stressful times, it is okay to allow yourself a small break from homework.  Whether it be exercising, catching up with friends, or taking a nap, taking a mental break from schoolwork is a nice way to de-stress amidst the chaos of cramming in last minute studying and assignment completion.

3) Sleep

Don’t let sleep become last priority! As someone who has pulled many (almost) all-nighters in Tome this semester, I will admit that most times I regret it and think that a lack of sleep could affect my performance on exams the next day.  Develop strong time management skills so that you can work hard and also get a sufficient amount of sleep.

4) Grades are NOT everything

There is an immense amount of pressure placed on college students to maintain a very high GPA.  While grades are undeniably very important, do not panic if you receive a grade or two that does not meet your expectations.  If you are struggling in a course, reach out to your professors and see how you can learn from your mistakes. Evaluating your previous work will help you improve the quality of your remaining assignments in the class.

So, my advice to you all as we approach finals week is to implement strong study habits now.  If you prioritize your time well, then you should be able to work diligently and also set aside some time to relax and enjoy the rest of your time left on campus.  Good luck to everyone as we push through the rest of this semester!
