Warm Weather Wear: Tips for Keeping Cool while Looking Hot

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DePauw chapter.

Have you been spending a few extra minutes staring at your closet trying to figure out what to wear lately? Blame the weather. Heat, wind, and rain are all factors to be considered when it comes to outfit picking- you don’t want to be uncomfortable all day! If you want your style to be weatherproof, here are some trustworthy tricks to dressing for any summer situation.

The 80s and Beyond:

We’re talking degrees, not decades. High temps can make you want to throw all modesty out the window but let’s be clear, wearing a bikini top under a tank top to class is only potentially appropriate if you’re walking into Scuba 101. For days that you would have to be paid to put pants on, here are some outfit alternatives:

  • A Dress: If it’s short make sure the neckline isn’t too revealing (and vice versa), too much skin might have you turning heads for the wrong reasons. Bring a light sweater if you’re unsure, you can always take it off!
  • Shorts: Whether they’re denim, cotton, or silky there should be a little extra room- no butt cheeks or underwear lines please. If you have to ask if they’re too short or too tight, save them for the beach.
  • A Skirt: Tight skirts should be worn with loose or flowy tops to class- you’re not clubbing. Flowy skirts can be paired with a tight top or blouse but you may want to tuck your shirt in to avoid the potato sack effect.

Summer Showers:

No one likes to be damp. Luckily, there are plenty of weather resistant products out there to keep you dry. If the humidity has you second guessing rainboots, then rain shoes might be a good investment. What are rain shoes? Basically rain boots in slipper form, they are a puddle-proof and adorable alternative! Sperry, Totes, and Bogs all make rain shoes- you can find them on Zappos.com. Of course, raincoats and umbrellas are always a good idea too.

Easy Breezy:

Wind can be a refreshing gust of air on a hot day or a whirlwind that might just blow your hat off. If there are strong winds, your outfit should be planned accordingly. If you have to wear a dress, make sure it’s a thicker, or stiffer fabric than cotton; otherwise, you may find yourself in a Marilyn “white dress” situation. If you’re wearing shorts, be sure to bring a sweater or windbreaker with you in case the wind chill drops the temperature.

Perhaps the most important tip I can give you is to have fun with your outfits! Color and pattern are always on trend in the warmer months. You can have your sun and your style too; it just takes some extra planning in weird, warm weather!
