Ryan Mandelbaum – CC ’13

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Columbia Barnard chapter.

Name: Ryan Mandelbaum

Year: 2013

School: Columbia College

Major/Concentration: Physics and Math

Hometown: Cedarhurst, New York (It’s next to JFK, you can see my house when you land [hi mom])

Relationship status: Single & ready 2 mingle ;)

On-campus activities: CC Senior Class President, Senior Publisher of Jester, CERN Researcher, Occasional Sports Announcer, COÖP Leader, Lion Statue Rider, Butler 209 Catwalker, Obnoxious e-mailer

Off-campus activities: It’s called “Columbia University in the City of New York” – anything in New York City is an on-campus activity (that sounds so snotty I’m really sorry). I like exploring and taking really, really long walks.

Spring Break plans: My suitemates and I are currently planning a tour of microbreweries in New England – the dress code will be boat shoes, ascots and cardigans.

Pet-peeves: Internet fights and bad body odor. Maybe smelling good is a privilege. I’ve checked it, I’m privileged. Please buy deodorant.

Dream job: I want to be the head of outreach for a high energy experiment – I’d deliver lectures (raps) to people with no science background at all about high energy physics research.

If you were stuck on a deserted island, you would need: A towel, sunglasses, a bathing suit, a beach chair, and anyone else trying to have an eternal beach party. Maybe some music and a whole lot of smartfood popcorn.

Every guy needs these three things in his closet: A highly individual sense of fashion, a favorite aftershave, the confidence to rock that fashion sense and aftershave.

Your perfect date in 7 words or less: Fried Clams, Fall Foliage, Playing with dogs

Favorite off-campus location: How far off campus? The rocks overlooking The Pond on 79th Street in Central Park, or Santa Cruz, California.

Favorite thing about NYC: The subway. After living someplace where public transportation stops at midnight, you forget how lucky you are that you can get anywhere at anytime really easily. Also, breakdancers on the A train. I dunno I like public transportation in general.

Favorite class and professor at Columbia: Major: Quantum Mechanics I with Brian Greene. Elective: Making of the Modern American Landscape with Elizabeth Blackmar.

Spirit animal: The Notorious BIG, an animal on the mic.

Dream wife: Aubrey Plaza

One thing you want to do before graduating: Memorize all the lyrics to the Wu-Tang Clan’s Enter the 36 Chambers and perform the whole thing at Bacchanal

Top three albums of all time:  Turn on the Bright Lights – Interpol, Man Machine – Kraftwerk,  Ready to Die – The Notorious BIG (all mood-dependant, of course)

If you could have a super power what would it be and why: The ability to shoot smartfood popcorn from my hands for obvious reasons (to stop world hunger and to have unlimited white cheddar popcorn)

If you could invite anyone to dinner, you would ask: Oscar Wilde. There’s a guy who knows how to have a good dinner party.

HamDel decides to name a sandwich after you (what’s it called and what’s in it): The Mandelfood White Cheddar Sandwich. It’s just a bag of Smartfood with my face on it in between two slices of sourdough bread.
