Stressed Out Already?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Columbia Chicago chapter.

Stressed out already? Don’t worry, so am I! How is it that the first week of school already got so busy? Well, I am trying to figure out how to relieve that first week stress. Here are some things you can do to help relieve the stress, so you and I won’t go crazy before Spring Break.

Exercise

“Studies show that it (exercise) is very effective at reducing fatigue, improving alertness and concentration, and at enhancing overall cognitive function,” according to the Anxiety Disorders Association of America. If you are lucky enough to have a gym by you, then use it. Going to the gym or doing some physical activity for 30 minutes, three to five times a week, according to the ADAA, is great way to manage stress.

Reading

I love to read, but to be honest, when school comes around I barely read as much as I usually do. Now knowing how much it can reduce stress, I will definitely find a book to read. “Reading worked best, reducing stress levels by 68 percent”, says cognitive neuropsychologist Dr David Lewis in an article in the newspaper “The Telegraph”. Even if you are reading a chapter a day it is said that even six minutes can be enough to reduce stress.

Hanging Out With Friends

If you have a little free time in that already busy schedule, then hang out with some friends. According to the Huffington Post, “A small new study shows that during stressful times, being around a best friend decreases levels of the stress hormone cortisol.” So, take out a little time every now and then to hang out with your close friends, and notice how much better you feel after a hang out.
