How Not to Go Spring Broke

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Columbia Chicago chapter.

It’s almost spring break, which means most college students are packing their bags, breaking out the swimwear and heading to the most exclusive beach parties. However, with the recession and the constant increases in tuition, many students are considering saving money by visiting family or taking on extra hours at work. On average, a traditional spring break trip can cost over $500, depending on distance and hotel cost. Luckily, there are more cost-friendly yet fun things you can do for spring break.

Road trips– Take advantage of the open road and gather a group of friends on an exhilarating adventure across the country. Spring break isn’t always about vacating to somewhere hot or exotic, but enjoying your time out of your comfort zone. The more people, the less money you have to spend on expenses or necessities. Road trips can be a great, inexpensive option for students who are just trying to have a good time.

Camping– Camping could be your worst nightmare or an unforgettable experience. The idea of being in the woods, without any modern conveniences or conventional shelter can be a challenge. Let nature take its course by just enjoying the fresh air and scenery. Hiking the trails and being opened minded can make your camping trip a thrill. Furthermore, it’s the perfect season to sit by the campfire, eat s’mores and share memories with friends or family.

Ski trips- Skiing is the perfect definition of a non-traditional spring break trip, which makes it the perfect opportunity to do something totally unique for spring break. Finding affordable packages will be very realistic, due to the fact that it’s almost the end of ski season. If you and your friends share a passion for winter sports, this will be a winter wonderland trip you’ll enjoy and never forget.

Volunteer– College students who are looking to be productive over their break should consider volunteering. There are opportunities to earn a college credit or experience within your field. Projects Abroad is offering short-term volunteering opportunities for one-week spring break trips. Take the time out to find the perfect volunteer match near you.

Of course, these aren’t the only inexpensive options for a broke college student. Research your ideas and you’ll be surprised by what you find. Nevertheless, however you end up spending your spring break, be safe while having your fun!
