Gym Chronicles: Surviving the Tease

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Colby chapter.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but today and tomorrow’s sun does not mark the start of spring. Just last week I walked to my econ class in Diamond in the sun, halfway through the class there was a blizzard going on outside. When I left it was sunny and clear again. Like any New Englander, I know that March is the month of
teasing. It can be sunny and 50 degrees one day, and blizzard-ing the next.  While, this may seem exciting the first couple of times, after 20 years (wow, I’m getting old) of weather ambiguity, I’m over it. Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do to change the weather up in Maine, but here are a few ways not to let the weather get you down.

  1. Take advantage of a sunny day! Maybe you weren’t planning on exercising outside, but if you wake up to a beautiful sunny warm day you might consider changing your plans. Take your workout to the streets so you’re not disappointed when an unexpected blizzard confines you to the gym.
  2. Be productive during a cold day! Get to the library and get your work done when you have no desire to be outside so you enjoy the sun when it comes.
  3. Shave your legs! Now, this may sound silly, but with unpredictable weather you don’t want to get caught with caveman hair growing on your legs when the weather decides to be warm. So tidy yourself up to sport those cute shorts you have been yearning for all winter.
  4. Bring an extra layer! Not only does the weather change from day to day, but changes hourly. Don’t get caught in a snow storm with just a sweater, pack an extra fleece in your bag just in case.
  5. Sing in the rain! While the rain may tempt you to turn on your “sad playlist,” resist! Turn on some happy music, have a dance party with your roommate, and sing the bad weather away.
  6. Host a beauty night! While your skin may have had just about enough of the cold weather, you have to stay prepared. Have your friends over for facemasks, pedicures, hand moisturizing treatments, and gossip. Not only will it lift your spirits, but it will also protect your skin. Check out HC’s Guide to Beautiful Winter Skin for more!

The weather in March can be exciting, annoying, and unpredictable; but with these easy tips you’ll make it through unscathed. Remember to stay healthy by sleeping enough, eating right, and getting exercise! All these things will keep you energized while the weather runs its course, whatever that may be. You can stay up to date on the Waterville weather here!
