Summer Beauty Guide: 5 Tips You Need to Know!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Carleton chapter.

With summer right around the corner, it’s time to change up your beauty routine to better fit the hot, sunny weather. Try out these quick and easy beauty tips over the summer to help you look beautiful and healthy as you have fun in the sun!

1. Healthy, Glowing Skin!

While tanned skin is all the rage for the summer, excessive sun bathing and tanning beds can be very damaging and can lead to sunburns, wrinkles, dark spots and even skin cancer. As a healthier alternative, try using artificial tanners to perfect your golden goddess look. Artificial tanners come in both lotion and spray form, ranging in price depending on the brand, and are available at most drugstores and department stores. Also, whether you use tanners or not, always make sure to apply sunscreen on all exposed skin, especially your face, before going outside.

2. Sexy Beach Waves!

Since your hair will already be exposed to a lot of heat from the sun, avoid using flat irons, curling irons and blow dryers as much as possible during the summer months. Luscious, messy waves are in for summer and this look can be achieved without using any hot tools. Instead, let you hair air dry for a bit after you come out of the shower and then, while it’s still damp, massage some volumizing mousse through it and scrunch it between your hands. Spritzing damp hair with some salt water and then scrunching it will also give similar results. If you are a swimmer, another way to keep hair healthy is by applying leave-in conditioner to your hair before hitting the pool–this will protect your hair from absorbing chlorine.

3. Bright, Summer Nails!

As the summer rolls in, retire your soft, pastel spring shades and experiment with some bright, fluorescent nail polish! Colours that are in for summer 2012 include hot pink, coral, bright orange and sunshine yellow. For an even more daring look, use a variety of polish colours to create fun patterns and designs on your nails.

4. Simple, Long-lasting Makeup!

With the summer heat, the last thing you want to do is cake on a thick layer of makeup all over your face. Instead, opt for a light, natural look that you can do in a matter of minutes and that won’t melt off during the day. Try using a matte base under your makeup–this will eliminate any shine from your skin and help your makeup stay on. Also, switch out your liquid foundation for something lighter such as a BB cream or a tinted moisturizer. This will allow your skin to breathe better, while still giving you a nice, natural coverage. For cheeks, you can use a bronzer to give yourself a healthy glow. Instead of lipstick, use moisturizing lip balms during the summer months. They come in an array of colours just like lipstick, but are less drying and many of them contain SPF which is always good. If you are going for a bright, summery lip colour, you can skip eye shadow all together. Instead just apply some water proof mascara to emphasize your lashes.

5. Show Off Those Cute Feet!

Since you’ll be whipping out your cute sandals and flip flops during the summer, make sure your feet are looking their absolute best! Over the colder months, feet tend to get dry so rejuvenate them by giving them a nice soak in warm water mixed with a few drops of your favourite herbal oil–such as lavender or almond oil. This will moisturize and loosen up dead skin, leaving your feet soft and smooth. Also make sure to moisturize your feet with lotion on a regular basis. Once your feet are nice and smooth, paint your toe nails with bright, summery hues to add a pop of colour to any summer outfit!

Remember, summer should be fun, relaxing and stress free, so don’t feel the need to spend too much time on your beauty routine. With these quick and easy beauty tips, you’ll surely be a total beach bombshell this year!
