3 Reasons Why Hooking Up is Better Than Being in a Relationship

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal Poly chapter.

Serious relationships aren’t for everyone. College-aged women are often incredibly busy individuals, and a serious relationship can take an insane amount of time and effort to maintain. While many college women are happier in relationships, sometimes hooking up and experiencing casual flings is the best way to go. Here are the three top reasons why it’s okay to want to hook up instead of getting into a serious relationship.

1. No Commitment

Sometimes, commitment is just the worst. It may require a great deal of time and effort on everyone’s part, and with your already busy schedule, a casual fling may be the way to go.

2. You Will Still Have Time for Yourself

Relationships are a constant push-and-pull game; you are consistently giving to another person and taking from them. Relationships require you to open yourself up to someone and compromise in difficult situations. Hookups require none of that; you still have plenty of time to be yourself and change for no one.

3. It’s Not an “All the Time” Thing

You’re free to go out and have fun. You’re free to do what you want, study what you want, wear what you want and be who you want, without fear of changing a significant other’s opinion of you. A hookup is meant for one thing and one thing only, and the no-strings-attached aspect allows you to flourish and be your own person, without being tied down.

Relationships aren’t for everyone, and that’s okay. College is meant to be a time of enjoyment and discovery. Sometimes serious relationships are too much for people to handle on top of everything else. As long as you are safe and conscious about your decisions, a casual fling or hookup is not something you should be ashamed of, but rather, celebrate.
