Taking Festival Fashion to Class

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bucknell chapter.

With summertime right around the corner comes the promise of tons of amazing music festivals.  Festival fashion has become a major trend for summer style, and while the adorable crop tops and tiny jean shorts are perfect for concerts, how can we make this trend part of our everyday style on campus?  Here are a few tips for embracing the free-spirited festival style while still looking appropriate for class.

Go Long: Showing off your festival style doesn’t have to mean showing off a lot of skin.  Instead of the short shorts and tiny skirts, don’t be afraid to go long with maxi skirts, maxi dresses, and flared jeans. Maxi skirts and dresses give you the carefree hippie vibe while still remaining presentable for class.  Pair them with a simple t-shirt or a fun sweater, and you’ve got a comfy and stylish outfit to rock on campus.  And if skirts all the way down to your feet aren’t quite your thing, midi skirts and dresses have the same effect while only coming down to your calves or ankles.  Flare jeans are a great alternative to the high-waisted jean shorts so common to the festival look.  Low-rise or high-rise, flare jeans are a great way to add a vintage and relaxed feel to any outfit.

Be Bold: Festival fashion is all about dressing outside the box and finding unique ways to incorporate the hippie-vintage feel.  Adding bold patterns and prints to your outfit is one way to take your festival style to the next level.  One key bold print on your pants, skirt, or top is all you need.

Add Some Layers:  Adding layers to your look is also a great way to channel the festival vibe.  Layers are a great way to not only add dimension to your look, but they can also help to stylishly keep you warm during chilly morning walks to class. Wearing a lace bandeau under your tank top or putting on a light sweater, vest, or loose-fitting jacket over your shirt will enhance the carefree attitude of your outfit.

Accessories are Key: To top off your festival look you can never have too many accessories.  From sunglasses to multiple strings of necklaces, rings, earrings, scarfs, you name it, more is better when it comes to festival style.  Hair accessories like headbands or flower clips help to give off the hippie vibe as well.  Go for more vintage-looking accessories like distressed metals, muted stones, or turquoise.  However, when I say more is better, if your neck starts hurting from all of those necklaces, you’ve probably gone too far.  But still, accessories are great ways to vamp up your festival look.

So as we eagerly await the days of music festivals and no more classes, remember that just because we have a few weeks left of school doesn’t mean our outfits can’t be inspired by summer style.  Adding some of these elements into your everyday style will help give you the carefree festival vibe that you most definitely will be embracing once finals are over.
