According to Mens Health Magazine, 50% of men expect to get busy this Valentine’s Day. Looking to “set the mood”? A couple of sensual songs can do just that.
Many people find that listening to music during sex can be a little weird, but that’s only if you play something super weird. At the end of the day, sex is a performance and all great performances are set to music right? Think about it: when you’re dancing, you’re basically having sex with your clothes on, so music in the background when your clothes are off makes total sense. Music during sex breaks the ice…sets the mood. And while I can’t promise you that amazing music is going to save the average bonings, it can add to the mood and create a pretty sexy ambiance.
Science proves it, too. Researchers from McGill University found that listening to music in the bedroom prompts the release of dopamine, the “feel good” chemical in our brains that also gets released when we reward ourselves with food, sleep and sex. Another study from the same university found that listening to certain kinds of stimulating music increases our signs of arousal, including our heart rate, breathing rate and skin conductance.
Here’s even more proof: A variety of studies, including this one from 2006 and another from 2000, explored the relationship between listening to music and light exercise. These studies suggest that people who listen to music when they work out feel less fatigue and can exercise for longer periods of time than people who don’t listen to music when they work out. Researchers discovered that listening to music helps us narrow our attention to the physical activity task at hand, which means we are distracted from any sensations of discomfort that may arise from fatigue while exercising.
So if you compare an intense 30-minute sex session, realizing that you’re burning just as many calories as when you’re working the elliptical, you’ll find that listening to music while having sex has the same benefits as listening to music while engaging in any other kind of physical activity. Cranking the tunes during sex can help you focus on your moves and distract you from negative thoughts or feelings that might prevent you from reaching your full potential in bed. You’ll last longer, feel less tired and be hyperaware of every physical sensation.
So what kind of music will really take it up a notch? A survey of 2,000 participants by music psychologist Dr. Daniel Müllensiefen (commissioned by streaming music service Spotify) found strong—and sometimes surprising—connections between music and seduction. For instance, the survey showed that singers with a dynamic range, ‘raspier’ tones, and less vibrato are voted best for seduction…cue some Marvin Gaye. (Plus, he was voted #1 to get you ‘in the mood’ for sex.)
If this evidence is enough to get you to try some bedroom tunes, take a listen to this playlist for a little Justin Timberlake and R. Kelly to get things going.
