It’s Getting Hot in Here

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bucknell chapter.

Excuse me, Punxsutawney Phil, but you said we have at least six more weeks of winter. I mean, coming from someone who loves the warm weather, I can’t complain. However, since it is only February, it is hard for me to enjoy these spring temperatures without raising some concern for our environment. As much as I have yearned for the return of long walks near the Susquehanna and lying out on the sunny quad, the word global-warming circles my mind. Here are three entertaining myths about global-warming that people have delightedly shared with the world:

“It’s a Natural Cycle”

One of the most popular arguments against Global Warming is that warm cycles are a common occurrence and some years are hotter than others. There is some truth to this; the Earth has experienced dry periods for thousands of years. Yet, in the past hundred years, the warm cycles and droughts have become more frequent and far worse. In 2012-2014, California experienced its most detrimental drought in over a thousand years. With increasing severity, it will be harder for humans to adapt to the drought.

“Global Warming is a Scam”

Excuse me, but come again? There is overwhelming research that points to real hard facts behind climate change. In fact, a survey found that 97% of scientists agree that overall global temperature has increase in the past 100 years.

“Warming has Paused!”

2014 was known as the hottest year but then 2015 beat it. And then, 2016 beat that as well. The 21st century is known to have some of the most record-breaking years. So, I think it is safe to say that warming has not been paused.

Enjoy the nice weather while it lasts, and next time someone debunks global warming…. Show them the facts.
